Why turn OSS off when using a tripod?

Unread post by artHarris »

I have read in several places that OSS should be turned off when using a tripod. Why?

On the few occasions I have used a tripod, I have forgotten to do this and can't see any problems with the images obtained.

When OSS is ON, camera expects small tremors in the body and tries to compansate them. When you put the camera on tripod, there is no tremor camera can detect and its compansation mechanism itself causes the tremors now since camera is fully stable while OSS goes on doing small movements to fix the expected shake.

You might think images very good even when camera is on tripod with OSS is on but if you zoom in, you will notice a little sharpness loss. Its usually visible to trained eye because photos you get this way will still be good enough, just not perfect. You will notice the real difference if you take the same shot with and without OSS and compare the photos side by side by zooming in.

Thank you.
The photos in question were all tele-zoom shots, comparing different lenses. Now I will need to do them again, although the Sony 12-200, the only one with OSS, was generally the best.

I also read some where that if you have a camera with IBS like the Sony A mount or Pentax K and a lens with OIS, one of the systems should be switched off as they can apparently 'clash'. With my Sigma tele I switch the OIS off and just use IBS. I also switch both off when using a tripod. I some times switch both off when using a high shutter speed on a wide angle lens.

AFAIK there is no Sony A mount lens which has OIS anyway. Even third party producers like Sigma or Tamron removes their lenses' IS mechanism when they release an A mount lens. Don't know if you use another mouth lens with adaptor?

My apologies, I meant to say my Old Pentax KR had IBIS and the K mount Sigma 17-70 I fitted had OS, so I switched the OS off. Some other K mount Sigmas had OIS as well.

I used to have a Sigma 70-300 with OS. I played around with both the OS and SSS and in the end settled with using the camera SSS. When in OS only mode the combo sometimes lost focus and hunted which it didn't do with SSS only.

I never switched on both.

All my Sony SLT gear gone. Still got my RX100 though.
