Nokia is putting a 41 MP camera on it's latest phone, and with CZ optics to boot!

And they put Symbian on it... the thing is a bust allready.

So what pixel density is that

• 41 megapixel camera sensor with Nokia Pureview Pro imaging technology and Carl Zeiss optics
• Focal length: 8.02 mm (35 mm equivalent focal length -26 mm, 16:9 / 28 mm, 4:3)

compared to the sensors we are used to and how good would that lens have to be to match such a resolution?

The same way Symbian is going...

Harvey: the pixel pitch seems to work out to about 1.4 microns. Presumably it's a Bayer pattern sensor, so for 1.4 micron pixel pitch the smallest "dot" you want to expose is about 3.5 microns.

To get a 3.5 micron Airy disc, you need a lens that's diffraction limited at a little faster than f/2.8. Since it has an f/2.4 lens, in theory it could do the job if it was essentially perfect optically and you were shooting wide open. Despite the Carl Zeiss input, I hope you'll forgive me if I entertain a few doubts though...

The idea is using the high resolution for digital zooming and downsampling (support ASA 1600...) in order to reduce noise. Nokia ppl don't recommend the full 38 MP...
