SteadyShot not working

My A290 SteadyShot
has ceased to work and is greyed out in the menu. The green bars are flashing.
The sensor is displaced to the side. It was firstly displaced to crop the top ofthe frame, then was centered and is now displaced sideways. The images are sharp. Putting the sensor clean function through its paces only sometimes shifts the sensor.
Newton and Elis quote £85 plus VAT as a best case scenario but probably more.
Question is is it possible to have a cheap repair such that the sensor is locked in its central position with SS disabled? Otherwise the camera is useless. Any advice please.
Jeff

I realise this was over two years ago, but anyway, this seems to be a widespread problem, based on the number of cameras offered for sale online with it. It isn't clear to me whether it only occours after a physical shock or whether it can appear unprompted.

I have read that it may be possible to simply shock the sensor back into its right place with a judiciously-applied bang (I'm not sure where, but presumably the amount of force could be critical).
