A900 underexposure/excessive noise issues

Unread post by lattiboy »

Okay, so I was in a thread over on dyxum and somebody said Sony should be contacted directly about the metering issues with the A900. I spent about an hour on the phone getting to an Alpha specialist and now she's looking for examples of the problem in RAW file format only. She seemed completely unaware of anybody having similar issues.

I let her know that this is not just my problem and that a large number of A900 users had a similar complaint. She said to please have any other A900 shooters with a similar problem forward a link to a raw file with underexposure/noise issues. She said she would forward the file(s) to engineering and I'd hear back early next week.

She didn't know of any planned firmware.

If you have a good example of the underexposure and/or chroma noise issue (and a file-transfer/ftp link!), email me at lattiboy at y a hoo dot c om

My only problem with the A900 is that the LCD screen shows the image two stops darker, to the eye, than the final JPEG or RAW actually is. I keep increasing exposure when I should leave it alone.

Hmmm, that's odd. I had the same issues that Michael Reichmann had.

"I have long found that Canon's matrix metering is very accurate and have learned to trust it. Unfortunately the same can not be said for that on the A900. I find that the A900's meter chronically underexposes by about a stop, and consequently I keep about a stop of plus exposure compensation dialed in much of the time.

Don't misinterpret this as the Sony's meter being inaccurate. Readings between the two cameras under varying light conditions in spot mode are typically within a quarter EV. What the Sony doesn't seem to do as well Canon is its matrix (evaluative) metering."

I am finding my LCD showing the image overexposed. Especially when I use fast (2.8 or faster) manual lenses.
I ended up compensating only to find the image is actually under exposed. I did not mess with LCD settings at all.
So far I have been shooting JPEG only.

With best regards,
Sury
