is it only active in low light when switched on.

there are other conditions too. It won't come in in AF-C, r if your in local af mode and you don't have the centre point selected, if you have 300mm or longer lenses and if a flash is attached it uses the illuminator on the flash instead. the one on the flash does work in local AF mode with other than the centre point. and I think when the self timer is on it works even though it flashes to count down I thin the last time it's on it stays on for a little longer until focus is confirmed
