I currently have an A200 and use a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 II APO EX DG lens for shooting
football and soccer at night and volleyball and basketball indoors along with a minolta
50mm F1.7 indoors. The shots produce a lot of noise and was wondering how the A580
would/could handle those kind of shots. Would the new A77 supposedly be better for this.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Stephen,

That would be a problem with how the sensor copes with noise on higher ISO settings.

I have both an a390 and a580. In my experience, any low light shots on the a390 would be pretty noisy above ISO 400, as for the a580 would be noisy above ISO 1600.

I actually never take my a390 to situations where I expect lower light shootings and I almost never go above ISO 200 with the a390, as for the a580 I regularly shoot on ISO 1600 or 3200 with it.

Performance does however depend on the lighting you have available. Maybe you could try the a580 in a store alongside the a200 to see the difference in different lighting?

Good luck,

Mark

The A580 is almost noise-free at 1600. You would see a big difference, as well as having much higher continuous shooting rates. A much better camera all round for sports or indoor shooting alike.

In case you opt for the a77 be sure that your sigma will be compatible.
And, BTW, welcome to the forum.
