Although slight, the gain in noise performance from using a proper profile may be quite noticeable, more so if the output colour is then strongly manipulated.

Here's a comparison of the 'Deep' and 'Adobe Standard' profiles used for the default BW conversion in Lr.
('Detail' module is off, blacks at zero. A 100% crop off the DPR ISO3200 a77 raw sample.)

Ok! So my guess of 2-3 meters was a bit off.
1.5m would give a total DOF of 0.44 meters.

Greg, regarding the knee you must take in consideration that the focal plane might be tilted in case DK pointed the camera downwards to get the shot :D

Yes Zeb, it had also occurred to me just a while ago, I’d sort of filed the problem away and it suddenly re-surfaced with the thought of the inclined plane. I’m thinking it’s still right on the boarder for dof at f2.8 from only 4.5-5ft away even so, if I had taken the shot something would be out of focus for sure.

I've just put up an article which takes a different angle on this and refers back to Agorbasta's profiles posted:

I have put the profiles for quite a few bodies in another thread where I also explained how they were done - http://www.photoclubalpha.com/forum/vie ... 090#p66090.

I've amended the article now to link to both Forum threads about Profiles, and to include a direct download of a zip file which contains every camera profile for every Alpha model I've gathered - mostly from Agorabasta's links I think.

David,

I believe most of the profiles you put into that large zip archive come from Maurizio Piraccini, here's a link to his blog with tons of customised profiles for Sony and Minolta - http://www.piraccini.net/2011/02/profil ... be-lr.html.

I normally take a different approach - I create the most general/standard profile and do all the customisations as HSL adjustment presets for ACR/Lr.

Updated to make the link to Maurizio's blog directly - I prefer to give credit fully but with so much stuff to deal with here I am sometimes not sure where things came from!

Thanks for your help!

It's a good job ACR got decent NR tools because previously I had serious problems removing colour noise for my A200 raw files in fact it was not possible until LR3 arrived.
There is a loss of saturation on the A77 raw files I have played with more so than what you would expect with "lower density" reasonably up to date APS-C equivalents.

What would be interesting is how it stacks up v something like the A77 or A580.
