FF Walk-around Zooms

Which two lenses from Sony's competitors should Sony target with new products?

Other brands and systems offer many more full frame zooms than Sony currently does, paticularly ones that cover the "normal" range from 28-70mm and beyond. Sony has one fine offering at 24-70/2.8, an upcoming 28-75/2.8 as a more affordable option, and nothing else on the horizon to replace the outgoing 24-105/3.5-4.5. Aside from these three lenses, they offer only ultrawide and telephoto zooms.

Ah, sorry. You are correct in that C is for Canon and N is or Nikon, but I was not very clear in my original post, was I?

I voted for 24-105/4 though it's a bit short on FF. Also went for the 28-200 but that's a bit dark at the long end. Ideal would be an 28-120/4 or 28-135/4-4.5 or maybe a 28-200/3.5-5.6 that remains F4 til 80mm and F4.5 til 120 or so.

Well, I didn't mean to suggest that Sony copy the specs of the competitors' lenses exactly. Faster is always welcome! :D

Very confusing. :?
The range should've been more diverse. The lenses you mentioned are too close to each other.

They are a selection of current lenses from Canon and Nikon that represent options Sony isn't offering. I could have included a few more line-blurring zooms of similar focal lengths, including Canon's 28-105/3.5-4.5 and Sigma's 24-60/2.8, among others, but figured this would be a simple enough survey.

The "right" answer depends heavily on the intended market -- to what degree is it intended for APS-C as well as full-frame? If it's purely full-frame, I'd say the best target would be the 28-135/4-4.5 Minolta -- sufficiently fast, excellent image quality, and intended for a market that has shown it'll put up with something that's big, heavy, and expensive.

If they want to sell very many, however, APS-C has to be a target as well. For that, it needs to cover a wider angle (IMO, 24 is barely wide enough) and size, weight and expense have to be kept a bit lower as well.
