I just set up my new Buffalo LinkStation Quad. It has 4 500GB drives in a RAID 5, giving me 1.5 TB of Network Attached Storage.

I'm not bringing over 250GB of photos over the network to start filling it up.

It's telling me 10 hrs to do so, but it's on a S-L-O-W 10mb switch, so when I get it on a gigabyte switch, it should fly!

The cost was just under $200 USD at the local MicroCenter.

Recently bought a simple 1TB LaCie NAS, works fine for my purposes... But I've transfered via WiFi so far and it is s...l.....o....w... Will have to upgrade to a Gbps-card in my PC and a couple of Gbps-switches to set up the net

WOW ! 200$ for 4x500GB... when the price of the Hard drive has almost double. If you want to make money you can at least put each 500GB has new on Ebay and you will make 200$ ...

The 1 GB Ethernet connection can got up to 100Mb/s , where the 10Mb/s is only 10MBs (in 1990s I probably never though I will say that "only" ...).

I understand that you put the box in RAID 5 (1.5TB). The problem some time with those Buffalo box is that even if you have a Gigabit Ethernet connection, the internal unit inside the box is limit to a write speed of ~45-60MB/s . This is the reason why at the end I sold mine, but due to the fact that I'm using a centralized storage and Computing from other PC for doing my picture, so bandwidth is key.

Just upgraded my network fron wireless N to network over the power lines. 100 Mbps but lots of raw files still take a long time. I bought a 1Tb USB for the desktop pc and then backup to the NAS Raid drive during quiet times. The worst thing is getting NAS, XP, Win 7, PS3, and iOS to all play nicely together . There always seems to be one thing that decides to have a problem.

I don't have Win7 or iOS at home yet but XP, NAS and PS3 work nicely together

Hi Zeb - I'm not on PSN at the moment - I just got the PS3 for the Blu-ray and the easy way to hook up PC type functions to the TV. It is probably a bit of a waste, but I've not got into PS3 games (yet) .

I was like you up to the point where my brother in law gave me Gran Tourismo 5 and after that my best friend a Logitech Force feed back Wheel system with paddles ... (I have not sleep a few days ... ). This game is almost perfect ... and for people loving photography, there is built in the game a simulator to take picture where you can select the type of lens, the aperture, exposition, etc ... So if you got a very good car or you record a impressive race, you can move your cameraman on the race field and take picture (you can even control the focus).

Until you stay with legit content, the PS3 is a very good machine to play video content... after that you need PS3 Media server install on other system or equivalent to stream (event the VLC player on linux or Windows can push video directly on the PS3 and Thanks to the Gigabit Ethernet interface).

Yeah, GT5 is great - bought it as my first (PS3) game together with the PS3 a little more than a year ago

According to the Buffalo Tech site, the unit can do up to 72 MB/s.

It's been fine on my home network. It at work where we have a slow switch.
