Challenge #26: Signs. 12/21/2009-1/11/2010
In the spirt of forgive and forget, here is what should be an easy/fun one. A few rules...
1) Pics must be taken during the challenge period.
2) Pics must be your own work.
3) Exif data should be imbeded or posted.
4) A brief description of any PP would should be posted. (ie PP included crop, curves, and B/W conversion)
At the end of the challenge period, I will pic 5 finalists, start a poll, and let the club vote on their favorite. In the event of a tie, Aster and I will consult each other and pic a "winner".
Good luck everyone, let's see what you've got.

All signs are cancelled here due to snow... I usually have lots of sign shots, but I haven't taken a good one over the holiday period. Not even a road closed or a hazard warning for ice, no sign of them anywhere.

Try indoors my good man!

Try discarding rule #1. I have a few nice signs in my archive ... and so have many others I guess.

Nope. That's part of the challenge, to go out and look for new stuff....01af wrote:Try discarding rule #1. I have a few nice signs in my archive ... and so have many others I guess.
I might extend the time, but I'm not going back to the past. Sorry.

Re: Challenge #26: Signs. 12/21/2009-1/11/2010
This shop actually has a long history. It was owned in the 1790s by Robert Nicol, wine merchant, and ballie of the Duke of Roxburghe (tax and rent collector). On the profits of his wine trade, he built the house we now own. A young man came to be apprenticed with him, Adam Pirie; Adam married his daughter, became a successful trader, and eventually Lord Mayor of London.
In 1964 a Highland Scots shopkeeper called Robert Nicol MacDonald bought the shop, and also most of our house (it was then in three parts). He discovered that he was a direct descendant of Robert Nicol, who had started the shop and built the house. But everyone who ever ran that shop - and everyone who ever owned this house - since 1806 has ended up ruined by financial crashes, and forced to sell. 1826, 1890-something, 1929, 1964 (the aftermath of the collapse of the Glasgow Bank), 1988 (Thatcher's boom and bust property value collapse - when we moved here). Bob MacDonald left all the accounts from the shop lying in our coach-house; he just closed the door on it. He said it was a VAT inspection which ended his business.
So now the shop has, yet again, gone bust. It's been a wine merchant (or off-licence) for over 200 years. I don't think I'll put in a bid for the lease.

How about this, taken last night, 30sec, f4.5, iso320, A900 CZ24-70 @24mm - I think the cross falls within the category of being a sign...........

Burning cross, all you needed was a moon... slightly brightly spooky church advertising!
Here's a local sign which is especially appropriate in our present conditions - probably a surer way of meeting your maker: David

OK, so it's a boring photo of an uninteresting sign and it doesn't bear comparison with the others posted as offerings to this challenge (particularly Philips which I think takes the award to this point!!).....BUT, it was the 6th photo I took after taking my new CZ 135 f1.8 out of the box when I got home an hour ago. Yes, the sign is at the end of my drive so I didn't go far to take it. No, nothing special about the picture, the composition or anything, but did I tell you IT WAS TAKEN WITH MY NEW CZ 135 F1.8 lens Only 9 photos taken to this point, all within 10 meters of the back door but this lens is NEVER coming off my A900!
Can you tell I'm happy? Hah! It's nearly dark outside too. Again - Hah! Have to go now, there's photos to take and it doesn't even matter that it's night time. I'm not going to work tomorrow!
