Re: Challenge #67:"Capturing Christmas'/Holidays'/New Year's Spirit and Joy.."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello and thank you, dear contributors, for your lovely entries! :)

After some serious consideration, I'd like to announce that Smulnik/Sig is the winner of Challenge #67 with both of his photo submissions that observe the spirit of the Holiday/New Year season in different scales and locations -indoor-home/outdoor-city- with different approaches yet serving the same goal.

While both shots are good, I chose the less traditional urban plaza "City Garden" or as I came to call it "Nocturnal Garden" as the winner photo. :)

Congratulations Sig and thank you for participating in this challenge. :)

The following post will include the evaluations.

Evaluation: Smulnik's "City Garden" entry.

Good use of the versatile urban space/plaza by the city council and the photographer, which brought the Christmas and/or New Year spirit to the dark city plaza. :)

Traditionally, Christmas and New year holidays and festivities coincide/juxtapose with the coldest months of winter season when the colours are muted and nature dormant awaiting the warmer months of spring to come to life, which results in less human presence and interaction in downtown city especially during the long, cold and dark hours of nights.

Therefore; repurposing the existing fountain spots by installing translucent colourful light globes to revive the open space to invite human presence or interest at night is a smart move by the city, which also provided the photographers with chances for interesting photo-opportunities as we witness here ourselves.

*. Why this concept of city plaza lighting works?

Use of same-size, similar geometrical forms such as luminescent globes create a true perspective, depth of field that utilizes virtual/invisible converging lines which happen solely by the placement distances of the globes from each other themselves.

Photographer is aware of the distinctive presence of the principle of perspective and uses the spheres as his guide lines to compose the photo frame. By placing the big blue sphere to the right and front, he augments the blue spherical light element and holds and directs the viewer’s eyes into the distance on a trail of similar globes that get smaller and smaller as they converge in the distance.

The organized and converging appearance of the luminescent globes on dark concrete surface almost creates the illusion of an extra-terrestrial night sky with floating planetary bodies against the chaotic and randomly-lit city elements in the distance (like the headlights, brake lights of the passing cars or the lit trees or the building's lights.)

Composition: Good use of the existing geometrical forms in creation of an impactful frame.

Colours: Good; well-defined, organized look of popping, bright colours against the randomly-lit and faintly-blinking city lights.

Less is More: The repetitive utilization of only one colourful luminescent global form creates this “City Garden with no distraction, no clutter.

Thank you and congratulations, Sig/Smulnik. You have a good eye for detail and for making the existing elements work successfully for your photo-story. :)
