Can someone recommend a good tripod head (or plate) that will not impede the articulating screen of the Sony A55? Thanks.

Two words: ball head. I use a Really Right Stuff BH-25, but I'm sure it's not the only one that would allow what you want. Not the greatest for landscapes, but ball heads are perfect for action.
