gimbal head

Hi folks,
I just bought a gimbal head to go with my 100-400 lens. I was wondering if you folks had any tips on the use of it or is it self explanatory? I've mounted it and played around but would like to know if there is more to it. Going to try to get some nesting eagles this weekend and it would be nice to know how to use it properly.
