NEX-5 with MD Auto Bellows & Slide Copier for 35mm slides?

Unread post by alphaomega »

I am still looking for a way to copy my 35mm slides by bypassing my slide scanner. Slow and tedious.
I found this combination on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Minolta-Auto- ... 4cf9e808a3
Looks to me like MD. Should not be a problem fitting to my NEX-5 using an MD to NEX adapter I already possess.
Can anyone please advise me if this will work and I can get quality copies by fitting my Minolta MD 50mm Macro on the bellows. Alternatively I can probably remove the bellows and fit the lens directly on to the slide copier? As these devices are for 35mm, will I be able to get the full slide copied? Sorry about being so ignorant, but I have never got involved in using bellows or slide copiers such as the one shown. Thanks in advance.

With the bellows or without the bellows, 50mm on APS won't get you the whole 35mm Frame -you'll need a 60mm or a little longer. Probably better to invest on the SEL 30mm Macro and a slide adapter like this http://www.adorama.com/NKES1.html

I used a 50mm macro with a bellows arrangement and NEX5 but I did need an extension tube to get full cover. See the first of the topic links that Pako has provided for a photograph of this.

I've been working on a slide/negative copier arrangement, but I've had to collect a lot of different pieces -- I think I've almost got it, now. I'm sure the bellows/copier would be more suited for the task, but instead I got a (new) plastic copier that is fairly generic. It comes with a strong diopter. So, it works on the Nex, mostly, but with a lot of distortion. That magnifying glass is pretty poor. So I just ordered a set of extension tubes.

Now, the question I had is, do I get a set of tubes for e-mount format, or a-mount? I considered e-mount, but if there are no electrical controls, you need a fully manual lens. I don't have a manual e-mount lens, just a-mount -- I might as well just use an a-mount extension set. So, that's what I did. I'm going to have this stack of adapters on the poor Nex, but hopefully I'll get good results.

My fear after all of this is that the slides will still be poor resolution, and I probably could have just stuck with using a scanner or anything, really, but I am occasionally using film, and I really want to be able to scan those. Processing a color negative is a pain as well, as you have to remove the color cast, but I have a couple of software packages that I think will work.

I think my biggest problem could be difficulty nailing the focus, but I hope the peaking will help, and perhaps the magnification modes. If I use my a-mount camera, the extension tubes have a "focus confirmation" chip that I hope will aid focusing. It only costs a little more for that. If you are willing to spend a lot, you can get Kenco tubes that have aperture and screw drive adapters built-in, it looks like. That would be ideal, but I think I'll try the cheap route first to make sure I'm happy with the whole setup. Also, the screw drive wouldn't help me on the Nex anyway. Although, aperture control might be nice. (The cheap adapters have a fixed setting. This one has screws holding in the aperture tab, but I can't tell if it's adjustable or if the screw holes are fixed.)

So, anyway, it seems like a manual lens would probably be easier to work with for a macro set up, if you need to use the Nex. An e-mount extension set with electrical contact pass-through is probably too much to ask for, but maybe one day....

Thanks for your replies and suggestions. I have forgotten where to find the original correspondence and pictures. I have put a bid on and if I win I will try some set-ups along the lines suggested. Should not involve too much expense if I fail as I have cameras, MD macro lens and converter. I am sure you will help me if I fail with a workable set-up.
