IR-Cut filter

Unread post by artington »

I have a UV-IR Cut filter on a Zeiss ZM lens - is it likely to interfere with IQ on the NEX-7 if used instead of an ordinary UV filter?

No. It's only likely to improve image quality by limited the range of actinic light transmitted, thereby making the lens slightly more apochromatic in practice.

That is, as long as it's a top grade UV-IR cut filter and not a Tiffen.

Thanks for your helpful reply, David - and it's a B+W so quality shoukd be ok. Are Tiffen all that bad?

Tiffen use the lowest cost filters they can get away with in my experience, and each different filter type can be a different 'grade' because they source from many places. B+W is guarantee of Schott glass, brass mount, top grade. Big difference.

Great, thanks, David. I usually use B+W or Hoya but I do have one Tiffen.

All best
