I'm afraid not. I tried it again, and it does pre-focus. It's a real lazy focus, though. I doubt that that's the huge power -waster

That's a shame, it would be nice to at least have the option to turn it off - not that it bugs me as much as it seems others.

I played with P mode a bit more. It really tries to stick with your selection, varying the ISO. P mode seems pretty powerful, not only the way it tries to stick with your selection of aperture, but also in allowing PDAF to function with smaller apertures. With the 55-210, at the long end, f6.3 doesn't look too good -- I would want to always use f8. P mode is the only way to use f8 and get your PDAF focusing.
