Why is it that Lightroom does not recognize Raw files from my A77-it is up to date with software and happily deals with raw files from old Alpha 7 ?

Lightroom is supporting A77 raw since version 3.5:

Assuming your version is higher, there must be another issue on your case. Maybe uninstall/reinstall might help?

My Lightroom works with both the A77 and A99 so it may be that you have an early version which isn't compatible.
