Heavens above, I look at these shots and feel giddy .
The older I get the more I have to watch myself near high places.
I used to be able to walk steel girders in the construction industry when young, but not now.

I'd kill to be able to get just one shot like yours. :D

Thanks for the invite Gustav, but traveling from Australia is a little prohibitive.

For birding I only have a Tamron 200-500.
I did try the sigma 50-500 but had two copies in a row that had stripped AF gears from new.
The first one auto focussed about 12 times then went down.
The second was stuffed right out of the box.
I have become very wary of Sigma now.
The whole thing cost me around $500 AU and still had nothing to show for it.
A little off topic I know but I am still miffed about the whole thing as I wanted the range from 50mm up.

I'll have to settle for Kookaburra's.

No settling involved there -- that's a nice shot!

Thanks to all for the wonderful images.
Gustav, those vulture shots are just unfair. You have to at least give us a chance to compete.

I agree Stephen, the first time I saw a couple of Vulture shots from Gustav I got that same vertigo feeling, brilliant shots. Some great bird shots posted from all. Robbie with that great Avocet photo you have, there is an Avocet here, our particular model has a buff coloured head and neck instead of the black and white one, the rest of it seems to be about the same, (I don't have a photo but it's in the bird book), also the duck with the strange wattle thingy, there is a duck here called a Musk duck (again no photo) with a strange wattle below the bill instead of above it, but I don't think I've ever seen one, although who could say with any certainty when you gaze out over a large collection of mixed water birds. And to me that's the trouble with water birds and especially shorebirds, the difficulty of identifying them from a distance, what with the amount of types that look the same or similar, the oystercatchers, stilts incl.(avocets), phalaropes, pratincoles, don't seem so bad but when you get into sandpipers, shanks, curlews (nomadic migratory), godwits, dowitchers, snipe, knots, tattlers, stints etc. there are pages of em, and from 50M a lot of them look very similar, so I sort of never really got into shorebirds much myself, although I do like lake and swamp type birds even if they are hard generally to photograph....sigh, so many birds, so little time. :)

Looks like another intermission, so I'll post a photo of a couple of Pacific Black ducks just for the hell of it, sorry about the flash, the light was just about gone at the time.

Alright folks, I am running low on bird shots. Even with the dust spot or insect on the lens and the narrow DOF, I like this guy.

Thanks Greg.. would be interested to see your Avocet so when you get a chance, shoot one for me.. hehe.. and yes, plenty water and shore birds make ID sometimes difficult...The duck with the big bill is called a Knob Billed Duck.. very original..haha..

Nice Heron jbtaylor.. a little soft but nice compo...

"Yellow Breasted Robin" I believe

Not a very good shot. These blokes are hard to get and you really need a dedicated quality prime for these.

Yes, high quality primes would make life a bit easier with these guys, but so would winning the lotto.. haha.. It looks like the light was very harsh hence the heavy shadows,, maybe use the shadow/highlight on PS to lift those shadows..

Thought I would just throw another MK in for luck.. hehe
