I have the 18-70 kit lens and I didn't dislike it but now I think there might be a lot of variation between samples.
Mine doesn't vignette as bad as your samples (that I know of) but while it focuses the image corkscrews untill the focus locks then it seems to snap to the middle.it's jst an annoyance ... but it's a little wacky to watch

I went for the Sony 18-250 a few months ago. I needed a walkaround lens for those days when you just grab your camera and have no time to change lenses. Like it a lot.
