Nice pictures from Frank, Henry and Greg.

Greg - love the campsite. Seeing as you have mentioned crocodiles already, and you appear to be pitched right next to the river, did this not make it a bit exciting if you needed to pop out in the middle of the night ? :D

Ah yes Birma the thought did cross my mind occasionally, there were crocs (mostly smallish ones, although I did photograph a very large fresh slide, but didn't spot the croc that made it though) lying on the mangrove mudbanks everywhere we went, (the whole place is a huge maze of a river delta system you could get lost in easily), you would only have to go a short distance from camp to see one, so yes it was a bit of a concern, but then we all had those alluminium frame collapsible stretchers with overhead ultra fine mesh nets too keep the mozzies and sandflies out, the so called sandflies are very tiny but they can really bite, and there are plenty of both around that sort of area.
I did take a photo of the young bloke enticing the very large stingray with a fish skin, the others who had been there before told me it was small compared to the large ones seen in the past, they have seen them up to 12 or 14 feet accross slide up the bank half out of the water taking tasty morsels left there for them.

Good evidence all the way... : )

Greg;

As Birma also mentioned, that's a true campside... I admire the encounter with the Stingray! : ) How they look so elegant when in deep water with their undulating body parts, sliding around rocks and coral reefs...

Mosquitos....I understand only too well! How annoying they can be!

Love the photos!

Thanks Yildiz m'dear, I think the nature of those stingrays has been very much distorted after the death of Steve Irwin from an encounter with one. I watched this particular one by torchlight for a while as it investigated fishheads and backbones left there for him and it struck me just how timid and gentle they actually are, despite looking quite menacing.

Hi Greg - that is a great shot - there is something very appealing about pictures focused around the view in a wing-mirror - I like the background in motion and the main focus in the wing-mirror in sharp focus.

The Fisheye difficulty :-)

Even after trying to put my self and any way ... I have never been able when taking this picture to not be caught by the angle of view. This is the best I have been able to take, I was completely in the corner of the small room and unfortunately my left part of the body has been caught (lucky for this one that I'm kind of thin with not a big belley :-)).

Like those shots Greg. Nice wide open space where you set camp.
Good one of the stingray, do they have predators? Thats a really good
one from the truck, fully packed with boat in tow motoring along.
More of these would be in order Greg. ;^)

I think you nailed that one well Frank.

Thanks DA, yeah Stingrays do have a mortal enemy...Tiger sharks, there was a doco on TV about it, there were Tiger sharks with numerous Stingray barbs embedded in them, obviously slow learners. Stingrays don't have any teeth too speak of just a gummy mouth with sort of sandpaper type teeth, the only defense they have is concealment, speed and manoeuvrability, and the barb in the tail.
With the Steve Irwin case, I think the camera man caused the Stingray to double back too escape him and then it realized it was underneath another threatening object close overhead and panicked....the rest is history.
