As someone who is both new to the a55 and new to photography, I can thoroughly recommend the above pdf book - its a little rough around the edges (a few typos etc) but it does a good job of explaining how to use the a55 - the section on flash photography was particularly useful to me as a newcomer.
I do not have one of these cameras, and consequently have not purchased this particular book. However, I have bought four of Gary's e-books on other Minolta/Sony cameras, either for myself or as a gift for someone else. All are excellent - well written and clear explanations of the functions of the camera, plus how and when to use those functions. (FWIW, the books I have bought are for the Minolta A-2, the Minolta 7D, the Sony A-100, and the Sony A-700. I also have read his book for the Sony A-330, as I was a proofreader for that volume.)
Based upon my personal experience, I have no hesitation recommending all of Gary's books as an excellent way to learn more about your camera and how to more effectively use it.
