Found out the hard way today that the A700 does NOT take any pictures what so ever if the battery is left at home in the charger!
This is a serious design flaw and I hope they have fixed this in the A77

Not an important shoot luckily, my Satio was with me as usual so at least I got a few snaps 8)

/Zeb!

YES!!! I discovered this too and was wondering if it is just my A700 or if other people have the same problem. Please go to my Sony quality control problems thread and add a post documenting this problem.

I didn't know about this, but I have noticed that they don't work if you leave the memory card in the reader at home....!

At least the D7D will let you see the image on screen before it vanishes in cyberspace

Hi Zeb - good spot and useful warning

One of the things that I really like about the two card slots in the A700 is that if you leave your normal card in the computer by accident you have back-up in the other slot in the camera. Doesn't work for batteries though! I have found the hard way about always having a spare battery in the camera bag - it is soooo fustrating getting to the shoot location and finding you have absolutely everything there, except power  .

Somebody just gave me a Canon AE-1 kit, said it used to be their dad's. It's all beautiful (outwardly) pristine stuff, two flash guns, the AE-1, it's auto-winder, a 50/1.4 and a Super Coated Albinar 135/2.8... but the batteries were left in everything that could have housed them, so all the strobes and winder are therefore junk. Kind of ironic to read this thread while discovering that batteries have ruined most of this stuff.

OT: the 50/1.4 has oily blades, and I can't seem to see any aperture blades in the 135...???
