I am looking for something to use on my 35mm Dynax 5, and have seen a Minolta 28-100mm selling for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, I have had the chance to try it on a body, as I didn't have mine with me, and the shop had no Dynax bodies in stock.
Can anyone give me their considered opinion? I'm not looking for a CZ quality lens, just something I can use to keep the old girl going, but with a bit more reach than a kit lens.
Thanks, A_A

I used one on a Maxxum5 (that I gave to my brother years ago) on a couple of rolls. Let's say that it works fine on film -just don't use it on your high MP Digital camera...

I've just recently put a roll of film into my Maxxum 5 so that I can use the full image circle of my 24 and 85mm f/2.8 lenses. My zoom for that camera was a Quantaray (Sigma) 28-90, which was "cheap" but I can't recall that is was "bad," but I was an ignorant noob when I was using it.

I never bought the 5 with a kit lens, Kevin, having always had something else to use at the time. (The 5 was a 2nd body, to go with my 800si), although it has outlasted the 800si by a good 5 years!

Thanks, Pako, that's all it's for. I parted with most of my lenses that would be useable on 35mm when I slimmed down my kit earlier this year, but I still get the urge for a bit of celluloid now and again!

I've 2 copies of this both are very similar (well one black with the Dynax 60 and one silver I got with a new Dynax 5) The lens isn't half bad for a film kit lens it's reasonably decent and is more than acceptable for what it cost (ie not a lot bundled with a film body) It works best on film and is probably better than the 28-80mm D at the wide end for landscapes stopped down. Tele end 100mm is a touch soft (not entirely unusable though) at f5.6 the 28-80mm D is better at 80mm or it seemed that way to me.
For digital use the 28-100mm D can suffer from blooming the 28-80mm D seems more resistant to this. Both lenses are fairly low contrast which is more an issue for film use. Ultimately compared to something like the 28-85mm golden oldie Minolta (which is still pretty cheap) leaving aside the build difference which is obvious optics wise the 28-85mm is the place to go for film or digital use contrast is excellent it's been a great performer for 35mm for me. If you're looking for tele end more and film use the 28-85mm is the one to go for, if you want wider the 24-85mm is an obvious choice (so is the 24-50mm) if it's more tele end the 35-70mm f4 is a killer choice great build, dirt cheap disgustingly sharp at all apertures/focal lengths.
Nothing wrong with the 28-100mm D for what it is...just it's not the sort of lens you actively go out of your way to get you just kinda pick them up with film bodies and don't sell them because they're worth not very much! If I get a chance I can dig some 35mm scans out for you!
Thanks Barry. It is something I would only use on the Dynax 5, as I just need something "general" to use on it, and the budget won't stretch to a 28-135mm in either Minolta or Sigma.
I did own a 35-70mm back when I had a 7000i, and it was a good lens. In fact, it was my ONLY lens for a while after I went to AF! I only sold it as I was switching to a 24-70mm Sigma, to get more width.
I will have a look for the 28-80 D, and see how prices go.

I got this lens with a NIB dynax 5 kit for 50 bucks. Shot a roll of film through the camera (fun camera really) but never even opened the lens up. Might give it a try one day and see what it’s like

I think it performs quite well, but DK informed me that there might be quite big variation in quality, so I guess I've got a pretty decent copy. Came in kit with my D7D.

Also remembered that my recent challenge pic is taken with that lens, shows you a bit how it handles direct sunlight. viewtopic.php?p=61140#p61140
