This shot is a slight cheat as this boat is not a ferry, but a pleasure cruiser taking out sightseers. The shot was taken from aboard a ferry though . Taken from MV Isle of Lewis as it heads in to Ullapool on the North West coast of Scotland during an incredible calm spell.

Glad you are finding old shots in your archives. Sometimes I browse through stuff that I didn't put on my website and find things I had forgotten about and can't remember why I left it off the website.

Those are 2 really nice shots.

It's a tough choice, but if I had to choose I think this is my favorite of the 4 you just posted. They are all good though.

Having a browse-able archive is quite a new experience for me (I'm putting my old DVD backups on to external HDDs). As you say, its great to find those little gems that you had forgotten about, or passed over first time. LR3 helps a lot in bringing some of these small sensor shots back to life, especially around exposure and noise reduction. It is also a good reminder that, in the right light, 3 and 5 Mp wasn't too shabby for producing images for the screen. The large dof you get with a small sensor certainly helps as well .

I like your holiday snappers of ferries Birma. I like good photos of ships so it’s difficult too decide between the close Hebrides photo and the scenic photo because that was a great view from up there and a great photo as well with the weather over in the background so I can’t really separate them for different reasons. The other two are good too.

Thanks Greg . It was a good spot to watch the Ferry from, although that had not been the intention when we chose that particular route for our walk that day. I will definitely go back to that spot with the ferry timetable in mind on our next visit .

Excellent shots here, old an new. I thought about this topic when I stood along the Thames last week. Lots of boats going up and down the river. I waited to capture one going under the Tower Bridge. Don't know for sure if this touristic attraction falls in the ferry category, but I'll post it anyway.

That's a great shot with Tower Bridge as a back-drop, whether it is an official 'ferry' or not. Perhaps I should have made it a general 'shipping'' thread anyway .

Ok, maybe it won't make sense translated but I'll give it a try:
The history says that the founders (around 1939) bought a "koster-boat" (kosterbåt) pic. and rebuilt it to fit under the low bridges of Gothenburg. One of the founders then said that the boat looked like a turtle lying upside down, and the swedish word for turtle (sköldpadda) is a composite of the words for shield and toad. So something like shielded-toad Then of course they just shortened it to Paddan, The toad
