Great images everyone.

Birma congratulations on acquiring the 16-80cz. I just love this lens. My copy was almost permanently attached to my A700 and now sits on the A77. Your images of the CalMac ferries and of the Isles are a great advert for visiting a beautiful part of the British Isles. You don't work for the Highlands Tourist Board by any chance?

I was searching through my archives for an entirely unrelated image and came across these two images taken on a not so sunny day in Auckland.

Ossie

Thanks Ossie :) I'm not working for the Scottish Tourist Board, but always open to offers if they're reading this ;)

I like the NZ ferry shots, especially the second one with the iconic sky-line in the background.

Good ones, Birma and Zeb. : )

Zeb, nice urban shots. I like the toad story as well. Very fitting resemblence and analogy. The second one of yours speeding away reminds me of the contemporary power boats that the Swedish pilots are also very good at driving.

Thanks a lot Yildiz!

To go with the new Lighthouse thread, that I have started, I have resurrected this ferries thread. Any holiday for me has to have ships in it, and if those happen to belong to Caledonian MacBrayne then so much the better!

First of all, the MV Isle of Mull coming in to pick us up in Oban to take us to the Isle of Mull. Every time I visit they seem to have a new safety notice :)

This is from onboard the MV Loch Linnhe taking us from Tobermory on the ISle of Mull to Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. It was a quiet trip with the crew almost outnumbering the few passengers.

Both with Nex 5 and SEL 18-55 kit lens.

Here is the MV Loch Linnhe about to return to Tobermory after dropping us off at Kilchoan.

Another ferry. MV Loch Coruisk heading for Mallaig on the mainland, after leaving Armadale on the Isle of Skye.

Nice theme Andy. Some names are familiar to me by virtue of the labels on the Single Malt bottles.
I used to visit Greenock very often in early 90s on work (I worked for National Semiconductors, now acquired
by Texas Instruments, my current employer). One place I fondly remember is Glasgow Hilton who at that time
had more than 250 Single Malts in their Bar. Many a pound was spent imbibing and enjoying those divine nectars. :D

With best regards,
Sury

Thanks Sury :) . I also remember when Greenock was the PC capital of Europe! I never made it to the Glasgow Hilton, more is the pity as it sounds well stocked. There is nothing finer than settling down with a Single Malt after a busy day out on the hill or shore with the camera :) .

A lot of great ferry shots here. Not a typical subject for me, living 4 hours from the coast myself, but Seattle did present opportunities. This is the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry returning to Seattle.
Enjoy

Enjoying... :D Nice shot. I like the haze caused by setting Sun,
as if there is a thin sheen of magic dust sprinkled over.

Great ferry shot John - love the dramatic sky and the ferry in its natural environment.

" ... and always take me there, the place I love."

Thanks for the title inspiration of this thread. From “Ferry ‘cross the Mersey” – not one of my favourites from the 60s but here is that Very Same Ferry !! :D

Mooring before the passengers (now mainly tourists) disembark.

Image

Going across the Mersey, looking at the new Queen Elizabeth passenger liner and the pierhead/ ferry terminal. That liner is HUGE!!

Image

Looking at the ferry’s wake - Liverpool waterfront on the right (with QE) and just on the left there is the Birkenhead side.

Brilliant Pat, I was hoping someone would have some Mersey ferry shots :)

The new QE (2 or 3? :) ) does look enormous. I'm not an expert on ship design but I'd prefer something that didn't look so top heavy  .

My husband is a 'Scouser' and as it's only 20 odd miles away we sometimes go there if there's any interesting photo ops - like the QE3 berthing or 'The Tall Ships' calling in.

That ship does look pretty top heavy/ unstable - I've no idea how deep the keel is but I know the Mersey isn't particularly deep - the ferry has to take a roundabout path across the river to keep in deeper water.

Whatever - you wouldn't catch me on any passenger liner/cruise ship ;)

Pat
