Some quick background: With its abundant mega-wildlife, Yellowstone National Park is called the Serengeti of America and attracts more than 3 million visitors per year. This includes thousands of serious photographers from all over the world. When they saw the coyote roaming through the distant sagebrush, a paparazzi pack of photographers rushed to this location, wishfully thinking this was the celebrity white wolf that lives nearby. Wolves generally stay at a distance, and out came the heavy combinations of big tripods and 600mm lenses. When the animal came closer and was moving fast, I abandoned the big rig and switched to the Sony 70-400mm, which I can hand-hold; it also gave me more flexibility and mobility to move ahead of the coyote for a better angle with the light. The camera was the Sony a900. 1. The coyote trots up the slope from Yellowstone's Hayden Valley. 2. Picking up a scent. 3. Taking a parting look at the approaching crowd of photographers, tourists, and a Park Ranger arriving to restore order.

Wonderful shots John - I really like the third with the stare of the coyote and the smooth background.

Very nice! Yellowstone NP is wonderful. I have been there 4-5 times and always want to go back again.

Sharp enough to cut. Composition in #3 is about as good as it gets. Love the background formation that balances against the head. Perfect.

Hi John,
Amazingly clean shots that shows his mood. Love them all...in the first and second, he appears to be on track, checking out everything but the third is a memorable shot with distinction.
Thanks for sharing,
Yildiz

I went to Yellowstone as a young teen with my first 35mm camera - Pop's old Argus C3!
Dad nearly got eaten by a bear taking it's picture as it walked towards him. With Mom yelling and everyone honking, he pressed the shutter, let the camera down and moved faster than I'd ever seen a fat man run! Thru that tiny viewfinder he didn't realize how close it had come, with nothing between them!
It's a great place to be with a camera. Especially one where you don't have to pay for film and developing!
Dusty
