Powerboat Races

Unread post by jbtaylor »

Every year, the fastest boats and their racing teams shoot it out in Key West, Florida. This year was special as it was held shortly after Hurricane Irma ravaged the Keys and southwest Florida. The community was determined to get back on it's feet and this was one way to show the world that Key West is bouncing back. The rest of the Keys, not so much. More on that later.
This is the first installment and showcases the a99 and the ZA 24mm f2.0.

Thanks for sharing, JBTaylor; :)

Building up the excitement with good follow-up shots...

I love speed boats, but somehow they tend to flip over quite easily. Good measures of security and safety there !

Yes, these boats do tend to flip.

I was 100 yards from the incident and was recording video at the time. Unfortunately, I was holding the camera above my head and when the boat took off, I lost my orientation and missed the shot. Total fail.

Regardless, fast boats require a sense of motion and that means panning.

Just beautifully captured Powerboat shots ! Well done, JBTaylor; :)

Watched the video and I'm speechless. How instantaneous and unexpected is losing control of these boats! Glad the two pilots came out unscathed.

Watching them hug after crawling out of the hull was interesting.
Maybe a few more.

Nicely shot; definitely gives a sense of the speed involved. :)

As I mentioned earlier, I love powerboats but they can be very dangerous; anyone wanting to be a pilot of these knows that he/she will be risking a perfectly healthy life for some excitement and trophies...
Maybe nowadays things are a little safer.

Thanks for sharing, JBTaylor.

The panned shots are worth it, despite not being tack sharp (not important in this case).
Looking at the shots you do feel the speed.
Splendid!

Fast panning with the 70-200, very well done. Cool shots!
