Alpha Silver Jubilee – 25 years 1985-2010

The Alpha System celebrates its Silver Jubilee or 25th Anniversary this month – though left uncelebrated by the inheritors of the Minolta AF legacy, Sony. They have no reason to draw fresh attention to the age of the system, as in four years they have taken it the same sort of distance that Minolta took the world’s first AF system in the late 1980s.

It’s not only Alpha’s 25th birthday. This is also the 25th birthday of modern AF SLR systems – all of them!

For Photoclubalpha and the historic Minolta Club of Great Britain, the anniversary does matter. A good many of you out there have been members since the launch of the system, often using the earlier SR and X manual focus systems before that. We still have a 1985 Minolta 7000AF and it’s still working just as it did when new.

25 years before the first Minolta SLRs appeared – a folding Minolta Six of 1935

I don’t mind showing my age to make a comparison. I was 11 in 1963 when I took my first pictures with an SLR camera. My father had bought himself a Pentax S3 – and the camera it replaced was 25 years old, a pre-war Zeiss Ikon Kolibri collapsible 16-on-127 model.

When the Kolibri was made, 127 was the ‘vest pocket’ format of choice. 35mm was on the rise, but 35mm SLRs had not yet arrived. They were as much a thing of the future as digital SLRs were when the Minolta 7000AF was launched.

But within that 25 years, there was hardly a single camera system made with interchangeable lenses that did not become obsolete. Only the ‘frozen assets’ of the cold war kept some systems, like the Exakta bayonet and the Praktina, alive. New brands were launched, from the British Wrayflex and Periflex to the Italian Rectaflex and many German oddities. It was not unusual for an entire system to be come and gone within a few years.

Even in the following quarter-century, the high years of the Japanese 35mm SLR, the succession of lens mount changes was bewildering. Independent lens makers like Tamron and Sigma were forced to make systems using interchangeable mounts not just because the public wanted it. A dozen or more mounts were made for every lens and in the 42mm screw thread fit alone there were endless variants – Praktica LLC (Pentacon Electric), Olympus FTL, Pentax ES and more.

It was more or less a 25-year cycle – the SR system was announced in 1958, and really got underway by 1960. It was to be another quarter century before the AF system arrived. We are now a further 25 years on – can we expect a totally new camera system, once again, in 2010?

Minolta’s SR bayonet mount, introduced in 1958/9, actually remained basically unchanged all the way through to 2005 when the last manual focus model, the X-370S, was available. It survives even now as a mount popular in China where the Seagull range from Shanghai Optical includes Minolta fit models. That mount only ever had one major revision, to add a linkage for open aperture TTL metering. The introduction of programmed exposure and shutter priority was cleverly enabled by using the existing design of lens mechanism and improving its accuracy, while adding a simple reference lug to the ƒ-stop setting ring.

Nikon’s 1959 F-mount proved similarly easy to improve without any basic modification. Both these bayonet mounts celebrated half a century of production in 2008/9 – another landmark, which Nikon was able to celebrate but Minolta of course could not.

Alpha 500, 550 and 850

Sony’s September launch for 2009 looks set to include three new models – the Alpha 500, 550 and 850. The model numbers are confirmed by the usual backdoor leak, appearing in the registration database for SonyStyle USA in this case (Canada has been a past culprit, updating databases associated with their site before the product is officially released). However, only a few people know what these cameras will be, and they are limited by non-disclosure contracts.

Sigma classic 400mm tele quick rechip

There is no need to dismantle the mount of the original series Sigma AF TELE 400mm f/5.6 lens, to bring non-functional versions (old chip) up to speed with later film and current digital SLRs. The whole process takes under five minutes, and requires two tools – a small Philips screwdriver, and a precision end cutter.

Sony at Focus on Imaging (report)

SONY’s stand was a real brightener for Focus. Gone were the black and orange colours I criticised at photokina, which for two successive years created a black hole compared to Canon’s oasis of light. Instead, huge white silks extended to the roof with bright spots and floods creating an inviting zone of pure light. White and orange rules!

The Sony Alpha 200 launched

AT THE Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas, Sony has announced introduction of the new Alpha DSLR-A200 camera which has been the subject of some strange speculation but was known beforehand to be a replacement for the Alpha 100. This is the first time a DSLR has been launched to the world at this show, and Sony’s decision to do so sends a major signal out as to where they see themselves and the Alpha system in the marketplace. It is highly competitive in price and we have just ordered our body for £369 including VAT (£314 + VAT) plus £13 express shipping from www.sonystyle.co.uk. This is exactly the same price as we paid for our last Alpha 100 in summer 2006.

How big will the new Alpha be?

NOT AS a force in the market but as a camera body! This question divides the camp of Alpha owners expecting to upgrade to the new Advanced Amateur model (codename A300) when it appears later this year. We now expect the AA model to be on sale before the end of October 2007 in some markets, with a publicity release date some before this.

70 years of Minolta

History Poster

IN 1998 Minolta published, for their 70th anniversary, a large poster featuring all the landmark cameras from their own museum and employee collections. Many of the cameras shown – all fairly small on the poster – were well used and worn examples. The original image-files for the poster, which we have archived, are of poor quality. They are Japanese inkset CMYK sharpened for pre-press, with very dark gamma. This page re-creates all the information from the original poster, complete with the photographs. This page has been updated so that each period now appears as a separate section – simply select the next page to move on after reading each one. Page 1 is 1928-39, Page 2 1940-1959, Page 3 1960-69, Page 4 1970-79, Page 5 1980-89, and Page 6 is the 1990s. If you know the period of the camera you want to see, go straight to the page.

When Konica Minolta’s photographic division closed in April 2006, the Minolta Club of Great Britain (operated by Icon Publications Ltd) acquired a mix of older stock, some dating back as far as 40 years, but much from the late MD and early AF era. We have priced these competitively, after studying international prices and availability, and our stock levels. All prices include VAT (UK and Europe only) and postage (to anywhere in the world, by Airmail Small Packet post). You will receive full invoice documentation, which is attached to the outside of the package in case customs wish to confirm contents and value.

The soft case CS-5 is for the Dynax/Maxxum 5 film SLR (and also fit the Dynax 3 and 4, 40 and 60 but not earlier larger body SLRs like the 505). Please note this is NOT for the Dynax/Maxxum 5D and will not fit the digital body at all. It’s for the film model 5. Our price is only £15 ($30) shipped to anywhere in the world. If you would like a similar soft case for the 5D with certain lenses only, try the CS DG-8, officially made for the A1/A2 but a very neat fit on the 5D too.

For Dimage 5, 7, 7i, 7Hi, A1, A2 and A200 owners we have the excellent leather-look (synthetic) camera pouch CS DG-8 which is strapless (you lock the camera’s own strap into a small press stud loop, which prevents the pouch from being lost).

It has a velcro closure, and inside the case lid is a pocket which accepts a spare NP400/NP800 battery or 4X AA. This a minimal, tasteful, practical protective ever-ready case for your 7/A series at £12 ($24). This case will also fit the Dynax 5D or Alpha 100 with 50mm f1.7, f1.4, 28mm f2 or 2.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f3.5 macro, 24mm f2.8 or similar size of wide-angle to standard lens. It will not fit the 5D/A100 with 18-70mm zoom or any similar lens.

For X1 owners, we have two different cases. Both seem to be popular. The first one featured here has a lengthy model number CS-DG 104 BK which you read on the pack in the photo. It’s made of a kind of reinforced hitec synthetic, with an almost denim-like grey texture. To keep things simple, this is £10 ($20) posted anywhere – again, to anywhere in the world.



Leather X-case

The alternative doesn’t come packaged. It’s a real leather case, and my own favourite. Made for the X1 it will also fit the XG, XT, X31, X21, and X20. These are loose, maximum packaging is a polybag, but they are all identical real leather with the embossed logo. They have a belt loop which is sewn, not openable, so once on your belt, they can not easily be lost or filched. Again, our price is £10 ($20) including postage and packing to anywhere in the world. My mobile phone is living in one of these right now. They are also a good billfold or change wallet.



G-series case

This leather case is made for the Dimage G500, G600, G400, G530 and similar shaped cameras. It costs £10 ($20) including worldwide post.



CG-1000 with lens
The CS-DG1000 case for the Z-series is actually a super, versatile all round case suitable for flashguns and lenses. This accepts all Z models from Z1 to Z6, and many other similar cameras.

It is also an excellent belt case for items like flashguns, or lenses such as the 24-105mm or 50mm macro; it will fit the 11-18mm or 17-35mm with lens hood attached and reversed. It is a perfect case the the 3600HS(D) flashgun – an exact fit, and the battery pocket inside even fits the shoe stand. In fact, as a lens or flash case, with belt loop or shoulder strap option, this is much better than many alternatives. It costs £10 ($20) including postage.



Strap Set II
Here is a vintage strap from the days of the Dynax/Maxxum xi models, with a sewn-on Creative Expansion Card case. Apart from having a European ‘Dynax’ name on the strap – rather spoils for US buyers, sorry – a little surgery with a craft knife quickly converts the velcro-closed holder to accept two CF Cards neatly, a little tightly, but safely and securely. Our price £8 (a mere $16) shipped anywhere, you do the surgery yourself. You can also cut through the threads attaching the card wallet, and have a perfectly good new Dynax wide strap – it takes seconds, and the strap is unaffected except for pinhole marks where the sewing used to be.

NEWS UPDATE… THIS STRAP’S WALLET IS AN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, EXACT FIT for Sony Memorystick Pro Duo cards – compatible with the new Alphas, directly using Sony’s affordable CF adaptor, and probably with your existing DSLR. This strap/case will hold, perfectly, six Memorystick Pro Duo cards. It will not hold SD cards, they are too large.

These straps are much softer and more comfortable than the Alpha straps for the A200, A300, A350 and – believe it or not – for the Alpha 900, which comes with the same sort of hard-edged, scratchy, lined strap.

THERE WAS once a beautiful Geisha called Minolta (here real name was Chiyoko but she adopted the stage name of Minolta once her fame spread abroad). She had many rivals, and was courted by many suitors.
