Thanks guys!A frozen Horseshoe lake. The lake is only about 6 feet deep and freezes quickly. It's just 10 minutes from my house, so it's one of my quick go-to places if it looks there is going to be a nice sunrise or sunset.SigSunrise SunsetStatistics: Posted by smulnik — Sun Jan 28, 2024 7:51 pm

Sony launches A99II at photokina

Sony has today released the details of the updated A99II, using a 42MP sensor and 5-axis stabilisation to match the A7RII. It does not appear to have retained GPS and the paragraph highlighted in red later on indicates a weasel-worded possible get out for this – it may not embed GPS in the image . . . → Read More: Sony launches A99II at photokina

Nikon’s DF finally recaptures the spirit of Dynax 7D

Sony said, as they took over the Konica Minolta camera division in 2006, that the day of mechanical controls and switches was gone. Economies of production and efficiencies of design meant that from now on, cameras would be controlled by buttons and menus. Anyone who remembers the original Alphas, the 7000 and 5000 from the . . . → Read More: Nikon’s DF finally recaptures the spirit of Dynax 7D

Sony’s Alpha 99 – mastery wrapped in dilemma

The launch of and initial reaction to Sony’s Alpha 99 has been spoiled, for many, by the overpricing of the camera generally and to a greater degree in some key markets. The promise of the SLT design, and Sony’s move away from flapping mirrors and optical prisms with their associated collimation and alignment, was . . . → Read More: Sony’s Alpha 99 – mastery wrapped in dilemma

David and Goliath? Nikon D4 dwarfs NEX-7!

Nikon D4 with 28-300mm VR, Sony NEX-7 with Tamron 18-200mm

Side by side on my light table (which collapses with a ‘pop’ when sixteen tons of Nikon is placed on it), and the NEX-7 is given the foreground role to avoid any accusations of using perspective to make it look tiddly.

I’m writing some reviews of the Nikon and other new professional DSLRs for . . . → Read More: David and Goliath? Nikon D4 dwarfs NEX-7!

The Alpha 580 – a three-way view

Once I had a quarterplate hand-and-stand camera, vintage 1920s. Attached to the front standard was a small reflex viewfinder, giving a miniature composition you could use at waist or chest level. On the same standard was a folding wire frame, with a companion eye-sighting window flipping up from the side of the body. This gave . . . → Read More: The Alpha 580 – a three-way view

Sony affirms NEX future – and SLT path for Alpha

Sony today announced upgrades and a road map which will keep NEX E-system adopters more than happy – especially those who have added NEX to their Alpha outfit. Diehard Alpha purists will be less delighted.

At the photokina press conference, a two-year rollout of additional NEX lenses was announced including a fast Carl Zeiss wide-angle, . . . → Read More: Sony affirms NEX future – and SLT path for Alpha

New Alpha 290 and 390

Sony has announced two new cameras this morning – but it’s not an announcement which will have Alpha system users rushing to the cashpoint and queuing at Sony Style. The Alpha 290 and 390 are dumbed-down versions of the 230/380 with user interfaces partly borrowed from the NEX including the built-in Help Guide. The rear . . . → Read More: New Alpha 290 and 390

The tortoise and the hares?

SONY has shown itself to be lagging behind the competition as we reach the third bend on the second lap of the development of HD-video capable DSLRs. At PMA 2010, nothing ‘real’ was shown and the closest they came to further launches in the Alpha range was an advanced pre-production prototype of a 24mm f/2 . . . → Read More: The tortoise and the hares?
