Beercan + A900 model shoot......

There was a workshop here in Seattle for shooting models hosted by Miss Aniela from flickr. I was bored and it was free. Not really my kind of thing, but it was interesting to attend. Didn't want to haul around the Tammy 70-200mm, so I grabbed the beercan threw caution to the wind. Wow, what a lens!...

Sigma 15-30mm EX IF: a great WA full-frame value

This is just a little writeup for people who are looking for wide-angle coverage for their A900. I picked this one up sight unseen from fleabay after reading a single good writeup in the dyxum db. I paid $300 for it, but it seems to go for around $400 used most the time. I owned the MinO 17-35mm D f...

Re: Which is your most used / favourite lens(es)?

On the A900 I've been using the 28-135mm Minolta and the 15-30mm EX IF Sigma. Really excellent lenses both. The Minolta is obviously in a class by itself, but the Sigma is incredibly sharp considering the 24MP Sony sensor it's dealing with.

Re: A900 underexposure/excessive noise issues

Hmmm, that's odd. I had the same issues that Michael Reichmann had. "I have long found that Canon's matrix metering is very accurate and have learned to trust it. Unfortunately the same can not be said for that on the A900. I find that the A900's meter chronically underexposes by about a stop, ...

A900 underexposure/excessive noise issues

Okay, so I was in a thread over on dyxum and somebody said Sony should be contacted directly about the metering issues with the A900. I spent about an hour on the phone getting to an Alpha specialist and now she's looking for examples of the problem in RAW file format only. She seemed completely una...

Re: need a low cost wide lens for a350

The Sigma 17-70mm DC is by far the best wide-zoom bargain around. I found it tack sharp past f/4 and it's diminutive size and focus speed are great pluses. f/2.8 is overrated IMO. :D

Re: Minolta dynax SONY 28-105mm AF lens mint

Well, I just picked one of these up for $103 shipped from my favorite ebay seller, so I'm excited to try it out on the a900. I've had quite a time finding a "walkaround" lens for this new beast of a camera. The 28-135mm is an amazing lens, but it has some practical limitations (LONG MFD, w...

Re: In car + A900 + Sunset+ 50 1.4 + SSS + dynamic range + luck

Wow, those are just wonderful! Love the treatment too! I think the biggest selling point of this camera (besides the almost ridiculous resolution) is the DR. I've been just amazed what can be recovered when overexposing by .7EV. This shot isn't groundbreaking, but I think it proves the point. http:/...

Re: A900 lenses

Nice review: I'm on the fence with the 28-75mm right now. I had the Sigma EX DF, but close-focus was horrid until f/5.6, so I returned it. I'll throw out what I've gotten out of my extensive testing: 28-135mm f/4-4.5: As good as you've heard. Wide-open there is some CA, but @f/5 and above it is tack...

I recently went to Portland for the weekend and was able to get 800 shots with a LOT of deleting and reviewing. Variable ISOs w/ NR off and AF-A enabled. No eye-start.

Re: what do people use instead of the kit lens on a crop camera?

Well, the kit lens is great for a beginner. Stopped down to f/8 it's quite sharp in the center. Obviously, there are better lenses out there. In that range the Sigma 17-70mm DC is by far the best value IMO. There are huge QC problems, but if you buy from a reputable vendor from ebay and use the cash...

Re: TOKINA AT-X 80-200 F2.8 any good?

I had this lens (gold-ring version) and was disappointed overall. Speed was good, but it was very soft below f/4 or so and has CA out the whazoo! For the sheer size and weight I thought it should've performed much better. After a few Tokina experiences like this I wish they'd stop making blunt-force...

Re: I just took the A900 plunge...

Thanks for the helpful input David (and for the history of housing in the UK!). I felt that having owned a Sony 11-18mm, I can't IMAGINE going wider than 10mm equivalent. I paid so little for the Sigmas (which included Hoya and Marumi CPLs!), that I couldn't justify dropping over $500 for just the 1...

I should also mention that I picked up the A900 for $2300 after ebay cashback here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Alpha-DSLR-A900-FULL-Frame-Body-NEW-6Gifts-ACQT_W0QQitemZ370103510923QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDigital_Cameras?hash=item370103510923&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A10|39%3A1|240%...
