Re: POLL: How much do you use the video function?
Having good stills and good video together was the reason for buying the A55. I bought a small HD video camera which I used together with my A350 but it was tiring and uncomfortable to have them both on my neck. I use the video mainly for family and work (industrial automation). I bought a monopod a...

Re: Things I hate about a55 and its siblings
I see no technical reason for the delay on full M - there is no exposure measuring, no AF, nothing. There is a problem with the first shot only; you can make a 7 fps burst consecutively with flash. It looks like a FW error to me. I try to ask Sony for a "warranty repair".

Re: Things I hate about a55 and its siblings
I really hate the flash delay. There is no way how to get a snapshot of the moment I want - even if everything is on manual setting (camera and the external flash). I looked forward to use my new A55 at a ball exhibition (Irish dancing) for my friends like in past years. It would be great ...

Re: Strange behaviour of genuine Sony NP-FM500H battery
I bought cheap batteries for my A55 on eBay in Hong Kong (seller broad2009). He has 99.2 % positive feedback, but all he sells are fakes. The batteries are lighter (44 vs. 57 g) and they have lower capacity, there are many small differences in printing and packaging. Otherwise they work. I managed t...

Re: A55 review now up
I have found out that you can wake up the camera by inserting/removing the memory card too.TomB wrote:... you can wake up the camera with the Play button (|>) too.
And you can switch off the camera by removing the battery.

Re: A55 review now up
Oh so, it was not obvious from the review that you are using a macPMB is PC-only Tom.
I never used any automated software for file copying. Now the PMB is the only exception because of GPS data handling.

Re: A55 review now up
Thank you David for your long awaited in-depth review! Just one less important correction – you can wake up the camera with the Play button (|>) too. I my opinion, the bottom hinged display is better than a side hinged. I turn the screen round as you and I open it rarely. But when I need it shortly ...

Re: SLT a55
I bought a A55V body two weeks ago. When I compare it to my old A350, I’m very satisfied. I just briefly describe my observations: Switching on is surprisingly fast for an EVF. The switch position silly copies Nikons and it takes place for the wheel so I'm learning to control it with my middle finge...

Re: Is video on A580 usable?
Only the A580 has focus check Live View mode with Contrast AF (page 92 of the user manual) - "Only when SAM lenses or SSM lenses are used. The Face Detection and Smile Shutter functions cannot be used. The AF area setting can be selected from either [Spot] or [Flexible Spot]." The A55 does...

Is video on A580 usable?
Could be video on A580 with MF only usable? Why they don't support contrast detection AF like on NEX cameras? Is there any possibility that they will add AF for video in a firmware update? And that it will work with non-SAM/SSM lenses? I like the A55 with EVF and fast AF but I don't like the low bat...

Re: Alpha 550 AF assist
There is another way: 1. Set flash mode to slow. 2. Press the shutter half way down to focus - AF assist flash will help if needed. Keep the shutter button pressed. 3. Shut down the flash. The camera will notice the change but it will keep selected exposure. 4. Press the shutter completely to take a...

Re: Full-frame shots with DT lenses
Interesting trick! I always wonder why the DT lenses are artificially limited to APS-C picture size. One could take nice square pictures on full-frame cameras and get more vertical resolution from them. It should be my decision how the picture will look like, not a decision of the camera. The photog...

Re: A little advice sought!
The Sony picture seems really out of focus to me. In camera sharpening will not improve such a blurred picture. The right hand side of the picture seems to be a little bit sharper. This could be caused by camera rotation shake. Was the super steadyshot on? Full EXIF information is missing. Anyway, t...

Re: Live View?
Motor expressed everything what I think but more detailed. I'll wait for an A700 successor with tilting display LV and with video. I miss adjustable F2.8 AF, mirror lock-up and video on my A350.

Re: Live View?
Live view with tilting display was for me maybe the primary reason for choosing A350 over other cameras and other brands. I use it occasionally only but there are situations where it is hardly substitutable. I was used to it on my A2 (great tilting viewfinder too). Fast AF is fine. Sensor based LV h...
