Re: SONY ALPH A A750

Now the announced rumour on sonyalpharumors.com is out. According to the latest rumour , the A700 replacement camera will appear in the first quarter of 2010, and its features will include: Fixed semi-transparent (a.k.a. 'pellicle') reflex mirror [and, let me add, most likely no MLU again ... umm, j...

Re: MLU petition to Sony

The new shutter-mirror assembly may not allow it ... If so then it's a faulty design and has to be dumped. While I do understand that closely embedding the mirror-up sequence into the whole take-a-metering-lift-the-mirror-fire-the-shutter-drop-the-mirror cycle may make things easier for the designe...

Re: ACR 5.6 r1 available

Are you sure of that Olaf? Fairly sure, yes. I just compared two conversions of a Sony A900 high-ISO raw file, one prepared with ACR 5.5, the other with ACR 5.6 Beta---and there is no visible difference between them whatsoever. With Lightroom 3.0 Beta (Process 2) I'm getting a very different result...

Re: ACR 5.6 r1 available

They also offer the improved Lightroom 3 type demosaic algorithm which makes ACR equal to converters like C1 Pro, RawDeveloper, DxO etc and should radically improve your conversions from all Minolta and Sony Alpha raw files. Definitely not! The raw conversion engine in ACR 5.6 Beta basically is the...

Re: Alpha 550 review is now on line

... I've said, no MLU, no buy. What I keep saying is: if it has no MLU (mirror lock-up) and no MPF (mirror pre-fire) then it's a snapshooter's toy, not a photographer's tool. I'd buy an A550 right away as a 2nd body to complement my A900 ... but definitely not without MLU. I'd accept MLU that only ...

Re: Sample gallery Sigma 50/f1.4 EX DG HSM

The absence of vignetting in the Sigma AF 50 mm 1:1.4 EX DG HSM at full aperture truely is impressive! So is the flatness of field at close distance. I really could use such a lens---the only thing that is keeping me from ordering one is: it's a Sigma :( I guess everybody has read the horror story o...

Re: What lenses do you use?

Your picture "Chaenomeles nivosa" (#19/37 in the Sigma 70/f2.8 EX DG Macro gallery) is an exceptional photograph! I like the contrast of the floral main subject and the artificial, architectural background which blend into each other in a surprisingly smooth and natural way. Apart from tha...

Gruezi Jasper---how does a Dutch end up in Switzerland? Let me guess ... a woman? ... or the job? (feel free not to reply ;) ) And are you in the French-speaking, German-speaking, or Italian-speaking part of that lovely country? ... which had three settings: flowers, person or mountains, for three d...

Re: Sent my A850 to Sony

I have six Pretec "Cheetah" 80× CF cards---four 2 GB and two 4 GB---, all metal housings, originally bought for use in the Dynax 7D. They all work just fine in the Sony A900; however they are too small for any serious work. I can recommend the new SanDisk "Extreme" 60 MB/s series...

Re: A700 Lens ID is in RAW --- How to Extract with CS3?

Bert, you can use Javascript to issue a call to ExifTool which excerpts the Lens ID (and Teleconverter ID and many more Minolta/Sony Maker Note entries) from the image's metadata and writes it into a disk file, then use more Javascript code to open and to read that file. That's what I do to transfer...

Re: LR 3.0 Beta ...

Michael Reichmann says on Luminous Landscape that Adobe is afraid of losing customers to Capture One, DxO, and other raw converter manufacturers due to their higher raw conversion quality. As a matter of fact, it has started to become popular among Lightroom users to do the actual raw conversion in,...

Re: Raw or cRaw

ARW Raw takes more space on the memory card than ARW cRaw ... but for those who convert their raw files to DNG please note that a DNG created from an ARW Raw is smaller than a DNG created from an ARW cRaw! So in the end, ARW Raw takes less space in the archive. And the cRaw compression is not lossle...

Wow! Thank you everyone, and particularly those who voted for my picture. It's the second time I won a Photoclubalpha Photo Challenge---the first was #7 "Right Around that Corner" ---and I feel honored. However part of the honour must go to someone else, because here I was just an epigone....
