Re: Large crop factor advantage of the new 18mp Canon EOS 7D

Here is an interesting article on various formats and pixel density vs lens resolution...if you take what they have to say literally in the conclusion then 18MP in an APS-C sensor is a waste of time.... Greg Thanks, I agree it’s a good article. In a recent DPReview of the Canon 7D, it says this: “T...

Re: Large crop factor advantage of the new 18mp Canon EOS 7D

Full frame 24 megapixels is, for many, a compelling spec versus any crop factor camera. David I guess to people who have a long history of taking photographs with 35mm SLRs (such as myself) it’s a logical progression to choose a full frame camera. If the digital technology could have coped with ful...

Re: Large crop factor advantage of the new 18mp Canon EOS 7D

Just to sumarize... Pixel pitch: A900 = 5.94µ A700 = 160 5.49µ    7D = 4.30µ A900 / A700 = 1.08 A900 / 7D    = 1.38 A700 / 7D    = 1.28 While the A700 has only an 8% reach advantage over the A900, the 7D does indeed have a 38% advantage. More interesting to me is the reach advantage that the 7D has...

Large crop factor advantage of the new 18mp Canon EOS 7D

A while ago on this forum, there was a very interesting discussion about the small crop factor advantage that the Sony A700 has when compared with the Sony A900. Recently, I wrote some mathematical notes about the crop factor advantage, and I put them on my web site here: http://www.robsphotography....

Re: A850 your advice would be appreciated

Hello John, I’m also from New Zealand, and also have a Sony R1. I went through the same purchase evaluation that you are now, and I settled on the Sony A900. I have my own hobby photographic web site which you can see here: http://www.robsphotography.co.nz/Sony-A900.html You will see from the select...

Re: A900 crop vs. A700

A very thought provoking article, thanks David! The title “Crop or cram? Pixel Density versus the big view …” can be related back to the pixel density (pixels per linear inch) of each of the three cameras as follows: A900: 4279 pixels per linear inch A700: 4617 pixels per linear inch A380: 4963 pixe...

Re: A900 crop vs. A700

The measly old 12mp A700 can still show some amazing detail with good glass and technique. I hope you will forgive a couple of tiger shots Hand held A700 + Minolta 200f2.8 Crop from the above image (you can see the meat caught in the molars) That said I would love to try an A900 for landscapes whic...

Re: A900 crop vs. A700

For those of you who are interested in why a lot of people consider that it really is very useful to have available 24.6 megapixels instead of a measly old 12 odd megapixels, you may care to browse this thread: http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/sony-a900-do-you-really-need-246-megapixels_topic49214_page1....

Re: A900 crop vs. A700

Sonalta You have raised some interesting issues. But, in the meantime, I would just like to comment on one of these. You say: “The fact of the matter is the A700 wins the true resolution battle”. You quote this article in support of your view: http://www.sphoto.com/techinfo/dslrsensors/dslrsensors.h...

Re: A900 crop vs. A700

Henry - nice shots. Of course he brand of the camera does not matter for the UWA usefulness discussion. :) Rob - The a900 loses in the head-to-head long end resolution battle with the a700. Not only does the a900 provide less resolution, it does not have eye-start af, and you are wasting a bunch of...

Re: A900 crop vs. A700

Clearly Don has never heard of cropping  He also thinks the world is based on tele shooters, it's not..for Don maybe, but we don't all share that view. Well, I did ask about telephoto range. And secondly there have been a lot of comments about other comparisons you could make and they were...

Don, you sure are a tornado of replies. Look, one thing at a time. My goodness man calm and easy. You are trying to compare an aps advantage to an ff advantage, and they are like I said - oil and water. You act like im trying to talk you into the A900 or something. I said to keep your A700 for what...

Re: Amazing amount of fine detail captured by the Sony Alpha 900

As for the actual topic... which has spun totally off point and nearly out of control. I bought the A900 for the detail within massive crops because my lil connection was used to getting Hassleblad, 1DS Mark III and Leaf size images. They wouldve had me a rent a MF system or buy a Canon system. I w...
