Re: dPreview A77 samples

It's very hard to tell whether the new 16-50mm is simple a very poor lens, as I see some evidence of optical stuff I don't like at all in the outer field and defocused areas, or whether this is combined with inaccurate critical focusing and poor JPEG processing (but this camera offers an Extra Fine...

Re: tripod lubricant?

I would use petroleum jelly - vaseline. Very small quantity. David I tend toward silicon grease, far more reliable than petroleum jelly. My favorite for a lot of long term uses is silicon stopcock/high vacuum grease, which does not tend to travel and is immune to just about everything. Also virtual...

Re: Sony quality control problems

Hi Walt, long time no see, I was just pointing out that that type of poll is open to missuse, but even so it appears that there were a lot of problems with the A700 control weels; also in the service manual (late edition) for the A700 there is an updated control wheel listed so Sony recognized ther...

Re: Macro lens with 5x magnification

5x macro is certainly something really special. You'll be fighting against thin DOF and missing light. Not something for me, but if you're into macro, at the announced price it might be a real winner! I think I'd prefer the Canon MP-E 65 1x-5x macro be adapted to the mount (preferably A mount). I c...

Re: Sony quality control problems

And it's possible also that those who haven't had the control wheel problem will want to vote to 'defend' the A700 and Sony. I'd be wondering also how many voted pro or con that don't own the A700. Greg Well, I own 4 a700s, all of which are in frequent use (saves lens changing) and none of them hav...

Re: Sony Lens Discussion Index on Flickr

Walt, the group does not restrict discussion to Sony lenses, just Sony cameras, and experiential comparisons are not only welcome but encouraged. Such comparisons simply don't occur in the group. Probably because of the instructions right at the head of the discussion area limiting it to Sony camer...

Re: Sony Lens Discussion Index on Flickr

Too bad this is in a group that restricts discussion to only Sony gear. For instance there is the new Tamron 18-270, a natural to compare to the Sony 18-250 and other 18-250's.

So what's the state of play then?
Greg,

All's quite straightforward. The a55 SSS for the stills operates exactly the same as that of a700 or any other Sony DSLR.
Due to the limitations of evf, particularily the EVF lag that's a extremely incorrect statement.

Re: a55 EVF questions

As a reminder, I am the person asking for a simpler, more basic, more consumer, plastic p&s with a bigger sensor -- although some here, as you say, keep wanting more and more. I am asking for less and less. :) Actually what we have seen ever since Sony got into DSLR is increasing demands step b...

Re: a55 EVF questions

I second that ticking off - no need to sling insults like 'old' at Walt. David David- I have to say being abused for simple analysis and logic has become the norm. And it does hurt Walt. For those that have not listened, short of buying one, I've used the a55 fairly intensively in stores. Just as I...

Definitely time to watch Nikon, they may actually do it if their patent is any indication.

I have no problems with a design like that if it's still photography oriented.

Re: All future Alphas will be SLT!!!???

I think we only have to look back at the KM A2 to understand where the development direction can go. While the AF speed was not stunning, for CDAF it was not bad; same goes for the EVF, it had a choice of 30 or 60 fps. And that was a basic design from 2001, updated in 2003 - eight years ago. It was...

Re: All future Alphas will be SLT!!!???

I have a solution you could simply make a post and get your point across..or you could (as you did with my 6mp v 10mp CCD thread) simply rant about something entirely pointless and complain about not getting your point across  The choice is yours! Even though I get plenty of lumps I expres...

Re: All future Alphas will be SLT!!!???

I did'nt see this until after I had posted above Sony may control about 15 percent of the global market for single-lens-reflex cameras by the end of March, Masashi Imamura, president of the Personal Imaging & Sound Business Group, said in an interview in Tokyo yesterday. The maker of alpha-seri...

Re: All future Alphas will be SLT!!!???

Only the more recent A560/580 models go some way to bringing the range back to competitive levels And those have been available for only a few months, with very little supply in the stores even in that time. Bottom line is that Sony, even with the a700 and a900 made almost no effort to sell their D...
