Re: Old camera appreciation!
Both internal batteries on the 5d are still working, "tip" leave a battery in the camera which is what I have done. Then the internal cell doesn't discharge/charge aka wearing it out. These are old cameras now. Do the same for all the cameras I have - just once in a while charge up the ba...

Ryzen Mini PC vs. Laptop
It is probably a long shot, but I wonder if anyone here knows enough about PCs to help me? I bought a new Dell ultrabook in 2019 while back in the States for a few months: i7-8565u (1.8ghz, Turbo Boost 4.6ghz) Nvidia Geforce MX250 2gb Intel UHD 620 32gb ram 2666MHz 512gb SSD + external Sandisk Extre...

Re: Another request for free use of my photos
A couple of weeks ago a woman in Amsterdam sent me a very nice, courteous email requesting use of some of the photos she had seen on my website. She said she is an artist and uses photos to make paintings. She gave me the link to her professionally made website that had examples. Her work looked int...

Re: Tiny sensor revenge gallery thread!
Recently (well not just recently :)) with the introduction of NEX, talk of gear, you know "better", more expensive gear, dominates. One would think that it is not possible to take any worthwhile photos with anything that is not expensive and/or the newest. Let's have a tribute thread to l...

Re: Why it's time to move away from Lightroom
This is a better list of new stuff in darktable 3.6 and it includes graphics: https://www.darktable.org/2021/07/darktable-3-6/ The new 3.6 version is a pretty big step forward, I think. For the last few releases the mixture of scene referred and display referred modules and processing was pretty con...

Re: The Changed World
Yesterday I stopped by the same store with the Alpha 7. It sells all kinds of used stuff: books, games, guitars, electronics, etc. They have a glass case with a few old cameras and lenses so when I am in the area I sometimes stop there to take a look. They had 2 Canon 300D (Digital Rebel, Digital Ki...

darktable 3.6.0 released https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/releases/tag/release-3.6.0 Downloads at bottom of page. And Canon CR3 support is coming. It isn't in the regular released 3.6.0, but you can get a 3.6.0 with preliminary CR3 support here: https://discuss.pixls.us/t/darktable-3-6-0-u...

Re: The Changed World
Today I was in a shop and they had a very nice looking Alpha 7 (Maxxum 7, Dynax 7) + Minolta 24-105mm f3.5-4.5 lens for 5000 yen (US$45). I was tempted to buy it, but didn't. Back in the States I have a basically unused Maxxum 7 I bought in January 2002 and it was my last film camera. I shot only 2 ...

Re: Jay Maisel loves his Nikon 28-300mm
Yeah, some people just go by reviews. In the same category as the Spec List Cowboys. In my case I find a review to be useful, but just one data point. Real use by very accomplished photographers who show their work so you can see it and their opinions about an item count for even more to me. A...

Re: Do you use Photoshop/Lightroom Smart Objects?
Photoshop CS6 is rather ancient. It came out in May 2012. I am using the current versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. It is possible, even very likely, that smart objects have been improved in the last 9+ years. Particularly the integration between Lightroom and Photoshop.

Re: Do you use Photoshop/Lightroom Smart Objects?
Using smart object going from Lightroom to Photoshop to a plug-in and then back to Lightroom and maintaining the non-destructive editing ability all the way is really cool, but the price you have to pay for that is too high for me.

Re: Future of A mount
Cameras were almost like a part time hobby to them, that's how big the company is, only Panasonic challenges their diversity. Panasonic also makes toilets, bicycles, houses, rice cookers, cameras, sexbots, etc.. As for cameras, I own the Panasonic GX7II (GX85), G3, and TX1 (ZS100/TZ100) and like th...

Do you use Photoshop/Lightroom Smart Objects?
Smart Objects in Photoshop and Lightroom are a dream feature. If you don't know what they are then I suggest you do as I did and spend 3-5 minutes reading about them. For a long time I had heard the name, but didn't know what they were and never bothered to check. In Lightroom you can send a photo t...

Re: Future of A mount
Have to remember newer cameras are much more power efficient, so I never had issues with AA's on the Pentax/Nikon bodies. Were those Pentax/Nikon bodies "full time live view MILC cameras"? Newer cameras use lithium batteries and are more power efficient. But still use much more power. Yes...
