You have no custom options on the A5xx models almost nothing at all and what we did have on the older bodies has been ripped out much of it (AEL spot toggle, DOF preview, DMF etc) Really very basic requests indeed..add a choice of NR settings for jpeg and off we go. DOF preview is actually not real...

Hm... I don't want to disregard your experiences. I'm just curious because I never had ANY quality problems with all the Sony products I bought so far. My Alpha 550 works like a charm, so did the Alpha 350 before. I can't stop thinking that there might be some factors besides Sony that may justify s...

Well - the JPEG engine of the NEX is indeed improved over the A550 - but looking at those in-camera jpegs, I actually doubt that there really is a big difference in RAW.

Well thats not really a problem of SONY but more of the A450/500/550 isn't it? ;) Seriously: Do a ISO200 shoot of the sky at a sunny day and then do it again with Ev+1. On the computer do Ev-1 on the overexposed one and compare the sky noise. Duh! The A450/500/550 have plenty of headroom in the ligh...
