Re: Eye Start on a550 but not a900?
Well, it still works without grip sensors so the answer is 'as useful as it is with grip sensors' - which is very useful as far as I'm concerned. The lens whirring while carrying the camera can be annoying but isn't a good reason to leave the feature off in my view. The question remains: is it prese...

Eye Start on a550 but not a900?
I notice that Eye Start has been added to the a550 but wasn't available on the a900. Does this indicate that Sony rather bizarrely thinks it is an 'amateur feature'. Has it been added back to the a850?

Re: Alpha 550 review is now on line
When I say focus accuracy, I mean accuracy and not low light sensitivity or speed. The A550 has much the same type of AF module as the A100,200,300,350 etc. I don't think it is any faster than the A200 generation (which speeded up the motor relative to the A100) or any more sensitive, and if anythi...

Re: More terrible sky noise with A700
This looks like a gamut issue to me. There aren't enough colours in the colourspace to implement a stepless blend in the range of tones depicted so the processor is dithering.

Re: The real A550
... Exactly the same thing can be seen with the Canon 7D. It's very good indeed at 3200, 6400. It is poor at 100, 200, 400. David On reflection I guess this must be primarily a lens issue. 18mp on an Aps-c sensor is going to need exceptionally good lenses - a sight better than most on offer, as the...

Re: The real A550
When's the review coming David? My patience for a professional appraisal of this camera stretched to its elastic limit about five weeks ago. The camera was announced and previewed in August. At this rate I'm going to end up buying it blind...

Re: Why is Song G lens brighter/
I have been working with an Alpha 850. I have shot with a Sony 70-300 G lens, a Minolta 24mm and a Minolta 28-135. The images taken with the Sony G lens are brighter then the others. -- Is this do to the coatings on the Sony lens, vs. the older Minolta lens? Or are my eyes fooling me? This is an ex...

Re: The real A550
Here's some more bad news for you - and for me... David David can you say something about the a550 AF while we are waiting for your article? I note in your Photoworld piece about the new cameras you say that the 380 has better autofocus than we are used to. Is the a550 AF also an improvement on wha...

Re: Sony and The Future
I'll bet money right now that most folks are using A priority 95% of the time.. So I stand by my comment about P mode being used by less experienced users, even if a few don't like it. It's not that I don't like it, it's wrong. You are extrapolating from an initial assumption that program shi...

Re: Sony and The Future
It's a useful feature for anyone who uses program mode, which is everyone. It's no more a feature for 'less experienced users' than MLU is.bfitzgerald wrote:...I don't use P shift a lot, but it's a useful feature esp for less experienced users....

Re: Sony and The Future
...The ones who wage negative campaign against Sony's basic cameras for no MLU, etc. are just miserable sociopaths, subhuman beings. We must feel sorry for them. At least one of them should be wearing straitjacket all of the time. ... Disabling program shift is a disaster. I might soon be joi...

Re: The real A550
No Program shift? Now that is crazy. Has it been removed because it interferes with the dynamic exposure scale thingy on the back?

Re: The real A550
... A555: dropped, face detect, smile shutter, scene modes and added MLU, program shift , custom settings and allowed user to change the Zoom button to DoF preview. Would not be expensive for Sony to do this, change the top dial and some changes to FW... I don't think a DOF button is really necessa...

Re: The real A550
RubberDials, is your current Sony/Minolta system (including available independent lenses and accessories) meeting your photographic requirements? If not, there is a simple answer, switch system. Every time I see a new release from competition I conclude that I do not require any of it. My requireme...
