Re: Things I hate about a55 and its siblings

AFAIK the Leica M cameras use a very weak IR-filter on their sensor because of their compact built. They use optional lens IR-Filters when the IR light is distracting. How does it look like, when IR-light is captured in a normal colored photo (e.g. from a light bulb)?

Re: Alpha 580 review is now up

@bakubo Yes he is very clear on it - the only nuisance is, that he seems to be completely unable to express his opinion. Instead he always proclaims it as "facts". Critics are told to be just not critically enough with Sony (which is the gentleman variant of declaring someone a fanboy) or ...

Re: Alpha 580 review is now up

David, I just ordered a year of subscription**. Your reviews were some of the most enjoyable photo-tech reads for me this year. As I'm myself earning an income by writing (who would have thought that, thinking of my suboptimal English skills? My German is better tough ;) ), I really can sympathise w...

Re: A55 review now up

@alphaomega According to my diagram the delay with flash on the A580 is ~ 0,39s this is without shutter halfpress. If you half press it down I would say it will be more like 0,29 or even below. The A550 starts at 0,22s with a full press and will be somewhere between 0,1s - 0.2s which is actually sor...

Re: A55 review now up

I don't know, but why would the A580 when using the OVF (!) be delayed because of liveview? Why is the delay using the A550 in liveview even shorter than A580 in OVF? Thats why I asked how you did come to the conclusion that it ought to be the liveview. So it actually was just a guess and could equa...

Re: A55 review now up

Why do you get that impression?
Remember that the delay does not occur in non-flash operation or when using non-dedicated flashes

Re: A55 review now up

The green bars show the difference to the timing of the A55 as reference value. So the A550 is 0,26s faster than the A55. The timings are done by Imaging Resource in their reviews and even show three digits after the comma. The timing would typically contain AF, metering and TTL pre flash. But their...

I've created a small figure with common shutter delays using flash based on measurements collected from "Imaging resources" reviews:

Re: A55 review now up

The delay of the A55 and the A580 (only in liveview) seems to be ~0.3-0.4s. My A550 has a delay somewhere between 0.0-0.1s (also in liveview). There are some customers on different German boards, who seem to have been told by Sony Support that this is a hardware issue that cannot get fixed in a firm...

Re: A580 vs A55 resolution

@OneGuyKs I understand what you're up to, but comparing resolution isn't that easy as it first seems. Just comparing out of camera JPEGs doesn't tell you the whole story. Just applying some USM sharpening on the results might make the "softer" samples be quite similar to the seemingly supe...

Re: SLT mirror removal made easy

..the SLT is merely a stop gap until they can AF much faster without any kind of mirror. So any adopters are merely buying into a half way house. Huh? Do the SLT suddenly stop working when technological breakthroughs in mirrorless AF systems appear? It may be years until any such concepts are ripe ...

Re: SLT mirror removal made easy

@bakubo Taking a photo really begins before you hit the shutter. ;) Seriously: Just joking here - I think this whole SLT mirror removal thing seems to be more like a way to satisfy curiosity and to a lesser extent a practical action for handling this camera. Flipping the mirror of a DSLR isn't reall...

Re: SLT mirror removal made easy

@bakubo A mirrorless like the NEX would make more sense in your comment, since in a DSLR there actually is a mirror in the way too**. **) It's in the way of the sensor when you use the viewfinder and when you want to use the autofocus. But I guess the classical DSLR-Fan would never think of it being...

... you have to consider the needs of others not just yourself... This sounds alien from your mouth. I'm used to hear you generalizing your own needs on all or at least most photographers. I've not slammed the A580 just said whilst it's good they addressed some key points MLU, DOF preview, le...
