Re: Why did Sony introduce the NEX for P&S upgraders - not .

I think folks should face up to where video is taking us with Sony. I think the new pelix cameras are what you should look at. This camera is a result of the push by sony to put video into DSLRs their way. It contains quite a few compromises to standard DSLRs, not the least of which is the end of OV...

Re: Why did Sony introduce the NEX for P&S upgraders - not .

Sony DSLRs had a fatal flaw: no video. Have you any actual statistics on this? Anything at all where new camera buyers were interviewed and said that they choose on the basis of video in a DSLR? I've seen none, but I have seen survey results done by Sony where video was way down the list of wanted ...

Re: New to DSLR - have an a230 - introducing myself - questi

I've got my eye on some M42 lenses for macro and portrait. But I'm a little confused about the macro. Some macro lenses seem to offer various levels of zoom - should I be looking at a prize macro, or is a zoom macro acceptable? (is my terminology correct?) Can a macro lens be used as a portrait len...

Re: sony 50mm 1.8 v minolta 50mm 1.7

I go for the Sony 50mm f1.4. The purpose of this lens for me is low light (I have the 50mm f2.8 macro as well). For low light use every bit of opening you can get is an advantage. And the 50mm f1.4 is certainly better than a SAM lens for durability and build. Has the newer coatings that Sony uses to...

Re: shop or private

There's no reason to assume the A700 will pack in. I used to run on that assumption, figuring it was so well built there were no worries. Until one of my a700s did break. The SSS unit broke it's suspension. And that camera had little shooting and was just over a year old. It was rebuilt under exten...

Re: alpha mount future - question for DK

The plastic mount, on an extremely light weight lens like the 30mm SAM, is no big deal - they work OK and the precision can be very high, as it was with the Minolta Vectis lenses and the Nikon Nexia system. David I machine a lot of things out of plastic, in particular I use a lot of delrin, but hav...

I guess, if he says so, I haven't seen a blue cast from ultra violet radiation myself, but then I've never been above three thousand feet doing photography either, I think the highest mountain around these parts isn't any higher than about four thousand. I think I remember seeing/reading once that ...

Re: May I be guided by you?

Walt, the Tamron 60mm f/2 is technically SAM not SSM - but as others who are buying this lens here will confirm, the focus action is as smooth as SSM with just a hint more mechanical feel and noise - FAR better than the SAM of the Sony 30mm and 50mm. But I will also add that while the 30mm makes a ...

Re: Sony quality control problems

I think DRO+ does affect exposure and can affect noise on the A700, as it D-Lighting does on the Nikon (but they put a tiny little mention of this in the manual, Sony does not). I would say that at optimum ISO settings like ISO 160 or 320, DRO+ will not be damaging - it is automatically turned off ...

Re: May I be guided by you?

We really don't know if Sony will start removing the in body AF motor. It might be on the cards..but there are dangers for them to do that. To at least some users having AF with legacy lenses is a selling point. Hard to predict on this front. I don't think anyone would be hugely shocked if at some ...

Re: May I be guided by you?

Next thing on my shopping list will be a fast longer lens may be the 70-400. There are a few longer Primes available on the web and Ebay, are there any to avoid? Also any others to avoid? Well, if thinking of lenses to build up a long term kit it may be good to avoid any shaft drive lenses. Or hold...

Re: alpha mount future - question for DK

I dunno about the current 14.2MP APS-C HD CMOS sensor making its way into the a7XX. With the a290 due to arrive on the scene with a similar resolution, isn't there a chance they'll develop something a little more special for the Advance Amateur camera? There was floating around in the NEX stuff tha...

Re: May I be guided by you?

Actually I couldn't give a rats how good a video cam it is transformed into after deactivating the conflicting still camera features....if you get my drift Walt, as a DSLR is primarily supposed to BE a still camera in the first place. If it's like most of these modern macro lenses it changes focal length as it approaches 1:1. Especially true for internally focusing lenses.

Re: Rear format reducing converter

Just a general thought, but if this sort of thing could be done on the NEX there is no reason it could not have been done on APS to bring full use of wide angle lenses. But it was not and by some pretty expert companies in optics. I expect it's much more complex than expected. Remember, for one thin...
