Re: Sony alpha A55

For myself, when dealing with Sony's deliverances and the assessment of such, I much prefer the approach of 'what they actually did' rather than what they could do if they tried. So if they give us an LV camera with a so so OVF, as far as I'm concerned that's what they are capable of, even if it's ...

Re: Sony alpha A55

I think I remember reading that the focus encoder in (D) lenses is active all the time regardless of whether you are using flash or not, so I'm thinking of some feedback loop interference in the focus system of non (D) lenses....conjecture only. Greg Yes Minolta used the D encoder to check regular ...

Re: Sony alpha A55

But having said that, if for some reason it's not possible or practical (depends on design / cost constraints, i guess) to put in a large, bright (pentaprism) OVF in a midrange body, i'd just as soon have it be a big and bright EVF. I have a Panasonic G1 with a stellar large and bright EVF and find...

Re: Sony alpha A55

At wide angle the 7D would often focus to infinity even for objects which were only 2 or 4 or 6 meters away. I recall that when I got the 7D in early 2005 and found the wide angle AF problem I put a battery in my Minolta 707si or Minolta 7 to see if I was just dreaming that wide angle AF used to be...

Re: Sony alpha A55

sar rumours should always be taken with a pinch of salt. there does seem to be a little superficiality from some here who perhaps didn0t actually read the sar entry: it does actually say "One of my sources told me that Sony also has a A7xx with optical viewfinder. He doesn’t know if that model...

Re: Sony alpha A55

hang on a second. they just released the a580, which by all accounts is a top notch amateur camera with all the trimmings, and ovf. that does not look like a move away from the amateur / enthusiast, quite the contrary. if, as many believe, there is a new a750 released at photokina then the overall ...

Re: Sony alpha A55

Sony might be the brand for some consumers, but they've burnt a lot of bridges with serious enthusiasts. I note this morning that SAR, the Sony rumor site is predicting the a700 replacement will be the a77, coming out in January. End of the DSLR and OVF with Sony, since they would probably follow a...

Re: GPS?

I realise that GPS has become one of those add on features people want in cameras now, but I don't really understand what it gives you? Do people forget where the picture they took is from? Even once you have the GPS data I imagine that it is tricky to "use it" with all of the different v...

Re: Sony 18-250 vs 28-75/70-210

I saw something somewhere a few days ago about a new Sony 18-250mm that is supposed to be announced soon that has a SAM motor. There was a photo too, but I didn't examine it closely. Pretty much looked like the current one, but had an AF/MF switch on it. It will be interesting to see if there are a...

Re: α560/α580 are coming

Evidently the A580 is EU market only? Or UK only not sure. As the only apparent difference is a few megapixels (unless mistaken) I'd not lose much sleep over that one. Wasn't the 580 the only one of the two with GPS. Funny, if so, the US, the inventer of and maintainer of the GPS system and sony le...

Re: Sony alpha A55

Greg - you could never do astro work with the 'translucent' models - you would get a sky full of binary stars. David The apparent offset has been pointed out in some of DPReview's samples. 11 pixel offset. In one photo there's a double offset. A triple star, except it's just outdoor lighting. Be in...

Read the specs carefully, including the menus. There is one thing about these cameras that was very nice to see for me :-)

Not surprised that readers are getting bored with the flood from Sony.

Re: Nikon D3100

It's rather funny in a way - you get the NEX+CLASSICLENS thing where on dPreview, you'd swear no-one wanted a NEX for anything except use with Leica and Zeiss glass; while Nikon sees its high end full frame users as wanting a walkaround superzoom... David Nikon understands DSLR users way better tha...
