I started with the 7D and Gary Friedman's excellent ebook got me up and running.
Bought the a100 (another ebook) soon after and sold the 7D to a colleague at work, who was also starting out.
Later added the a700 (yet another ebook) with which I am delighted and the journey continues.
But I cannot help thinking how much I liked the 7D and although my 100 is my "reserve" I am almost tempted to replace it with a good 7D again.

Is it still in regular use by anyone here

If you get serious about this and are in States, mine is available. It has the FFB problem.

I use my 7D for all studio shots of products. It's fast, the filesize is ideal, it is 100 per cent reliable and the memory settings enable me to switch between a special preset for recording rear screens on cameras, and the regular flash setting for shooting details of equipment.

Here in Germany, the Dynax 7D debuted at EUR 1,600 in Sep. 2004. I bought mine in March 2005 at EUR 1,050 (after cash-back). In May 2006, I bought a second at EUR 500. And that's what I am using still.

In May 2008 and in August 2008, I tried to purchase an A700 ... but I returned both for a refund immediately due to poor auto-focusing accuracy. APS-C format and 12 MP would match my requirements just perfectly ... if only AF would be accurate. But it isn't. So now I am waiting for the A900's price to fall down to EUR 2,000 (initially at EUR 2,799; currently at EUR 2,235). Right now, I am still using my two 7Ds (and a closet full of Minolta AF lenses).

Isn;t sony doing the repairs fo the FFB problem? I though it was solved

I'm keeping the 7D as my portrait camera, and back up camera for big events. Colors are very pleasant, even on dark skin people. I only noticed a back focus issue with the Minolta 85mm f1.4, but since I never shoot this lens wide open, I don't really care. No way I'll sell it!

I have been tempted to pick one up in the past. The only concern is "how long will it last"

The thoughts of buying a camera only for it to die on you, are not too nice. I am sure some out there are just fine. With the 5d, it was different..I have had good use out of it, saying that..if it did die. I might be tempted to get it fixed, if it were not too silly price wise.

In the short time I owned mine it was fine and it wasn't until I viewed posts in Dyxum (am I allowed to say that here ) that I became aware of the dreaded fault everyone refers to.

I used to have a 1.8 petrol LandRover Freelander and everyone (including my local LR dealer) said that it wasn't a question of "if" the head gasket problem struck, it was simply a question of "when". And sure enough it did, blew the engine which cost me £2K to have repaired (out of warranty naturally) so I have become wary of the built in fault syndrome (not that I had much luck using a Freelander for photography ).

I'd still like to re-aquire one though. (7D not the LR)

I believe they still are. I just don't have any incentive to do it.

I would get it fixed ASAP, if you don't want the camera anymore, you will be sure to get a better price with it working 100%.

I'm sure your right...probably won't happen.

I got my D7D on December 31'st 2004 and I still haven't replaced it
