How Panasonic-Matsushita, the biggest electronic compnay differs from Sony, the 2nd biggest. While Sony concentrated on making the smallesct camcorder, Panasonic concentrated on making the largest toilet seat.:

Today it is hard to know who owns whom, so Coca Cola could have sold cameras indirectly, but I did not say they did.

Panasonic have done well to establish themselves in the compact, superzoom market. I wish sony would put as much effort into cybershot as pannie do with lumix.
However, Panasonic's entry into the DSLR market, was a complete disaster..I expect the G1 to do better, and for them to carry on with this type of micro 4/3 thing. But the problem with that is, Panasonic will not get into bargain basement DSLR price ranges. So it will limit their market share. They have consistently shown, esp with their high end compacts, that they want to maintain strong profit margins. This will ensure they never are in a position to challenge the top 3.
The other major what if problem, is if any top maker comes along and does micro APS or something like it, they will probably spell the kiss of death to micro 4/3.
I honestly think they are better off sticking to superzooms and compacts, they don't have the muscle to compete with the big boys, nor the right approach.

Samsung said they will get into it with APS-C size micro in a big way. Panasonic and Olympus will soon find themselves in the same corner as with 4/3. The majors will do the same thing with APS-C and with adaptors their syatems will be comaptible with a lot of old lenses. Panasonic and Olympus will be successful for a short time only with their micro. Micro is supposed to save their system, which is failing in the marketplace. IMHO I think that they are wasting their time.

Please also note that this list is very out of date (Sony Europa BV and BE-ST, for example, have been disolved).

Please could you at least attempt to check the validity of your data before you post? It makes it easier to read interesting information rather than junk.

not true, these are not only subsidiaries, but also joint ventures, companies, where Sony has ceratin percentage of shares, etc.

The majority are wholly owned subsidiaries. Sony Ericsson is a 50:50 joint venture. There are a number that are either dormant or have been disolved (one at least 2 years ago). The remaining appear to be production companies that make shows for Sony Pictures Television although I do not have the information on hand to check exactly what interest if any Sony has in these.

If you would like me to provide full confirmation on these let me know and I will do this when I get to work tomorrow?

Thanks for the welcome - I have been lurking in the background for a while but as I work for Sony I didn't want to sign up as I didn't want to be bombarded with questions about new products!!!

So by your own admission you have simply copied and pasted information found on the net (again) without understanding what this actually relates to. I have had a check earlier today and found the following:

12 companies are dormant or closed
8 are joint ventures (50:50 with another company)
109 are divisions of 80 wholly owned subsidiaries of Sony Corporation

When Sony notify the SEC of quarterly earnings or publish financial reports for Sony Corporation the above companies (and some not on your list) make up the data. These are not 3rd party companies that Sony has a stake in.

I find some of your posts interesting (like the wish list for new lenses in the PMA thread) but the vast majority seem to be random data found on the internet and posted out of context. Please try to stick to the interesting stuff as I personally find that the rest just doesn't seem to have any merit here!

Buddy, you are keeping on totally contradicting yourself. After you study up on the subject, please post some meaningful information.

OK - I admit that I underestimated the number of equity entities in my earlier post but on a day to day basis I am only involved with the European operation and most of these other ones are outside of this. I still believe that you are posting information that has no real meaning within the context of the post but in the interest of forum peace (and so I don't look too pedantic in my first posts) this will be my last post on the subject.

Neither Matsushita, nor Sony are pure electronic companies. Sony is heavily involved in entertainment and Panasonic in electrical products.

Byuing Sanyo will give Matsushita more capacity to make inexpensive cameras, as Sanyo assemled cameras for many comapnies, including Olympus.

With Sanyo, Matsushita also bought the Fischer brand, so we may see it resurected in audio systems.
