Dear David kilpatrick
Thank you for showing interest. I received the reply by telephone and unfortunately I did ask the persons name, being somewhat stunned at his comment.

Although my 24-105d Minolta lens may as one person on line suggested it may be caused by a screw coming lose from the zooming not the focusing gear, it may be a known issue on some of these lenses. I will have to get it to a repairer to see, I will let you know of the outcome.

many thanks

Mike,
It was I who asked if it might be zoom related, (I have a vested interest, I also have a 24-105 and I reckon it's a great little lens), a zoom cam roller screw came loose in mine causing the zoom grip to jam, and I've heard of others doing it as well, but like I say it's not a difficult fix to do if indeed that's all it is.
