Don't think i've ever seen the camera companies publish a max it never comes out until they exceed it like in the F-505V 128mb was the max and it wouldnt take the newer 256mb and up cards it was big news after that

any camera should at a minimum be able to do 127-137gig right now (less than 137 do to file system overhead). As that was the limit for ATA for a while till the added extended addressing which bumped it into the Petabyte range.

Earlier gear was mainly artificially limited do to various software reasons. I think some cameras limited it for small gains in performance and software footprint.

But it can only do files of 4gig (not a problem for us, medium format is only producing 320ish meg files, so they are ok too, video is a problem). But the cards/cameras can do up to 2TB of storage.

So we can expect to see up to 2TB cards max. I think CF will be replaced by other formats by then. But the hunt for working out a new standard Filesystem for media cards is probably on now.

I can't see the logic in these huge cards myself, what happens if you fill it up with images or even half fill it, (still hundreds of images) and it goes on the fritz before you get a chance to back it up and all the images are lost, I for one would not be a happy camper.
I think it's more sensible too use a handfull of 2 and 4GB cards myself rather than take the risk with one huge card, if the cameras could write or backup to two cards at once then the big cards might be a lot safer, but none of the Sony DSLR's do this, as far as I know.

Next gen cams will have 2 slots as standard, one will work as backup of the primary. Think about that, if you have 4 2TB card, you can easily get rid of those bulky external hard drives. You can use 2 in your cam and 2 cards for external backup to your computer in raid, fantastic.

Get a few of these cards and then you can back up your PC to your camera

I can see with this drift towards hi-res video on DSLR's or even high frame rates, very large memory capacity might eventually become a must have...so as long as they fix the backup situation also I won't have to fret about it.

Yeah you could use them for photo backup, but it isn't very cost effective, nor that fast. (compared to a regular HDD)

With 40MP sensor coming, I think next gen of SS card will start from a minimum of 128Gb or more. It will be nice to have large cards of this size for even an A900, shooting RAW+JPG

What about a Phase One 65+ back with a Sensor resolution of 60.5 Megapixel with 8984 x 6732 active pixels achieving 180 MB, 8 bit RGB files? A 2 or 4 Gb card won't take you far as the output is 16 bits/channel in RAW. As far as I can make up the RAW file size is 60 Mb. Suddenly you have shot a couple of hundred images and that adds up to 12 Gb. I can see these high capacity cards coming in handy at some stage but I think the prices are a bit steep. I like the dynamic range of 12.5 stops. Not bad.

Interesting, but it does seem unnecessary for the average person. I mean, at what point do we just run out of the need for more card space?

I just paid $20 for a 133x 4GB card. I dunno, I hope that should keep me for a while!? Good bang for the buck... I don't know how I'd back up 64GB.

I can recall taking a trip with a couple of 128MB cards (and a smaller camera) many years ago, and running out of space by the end of the trip. Well, I shouldn't have that problem, except that at at a couple of airshows, I was in danger of not having enough memory, particularly using RAW -- it seriously cuts down the available space. I'm hoping to not run out, but I still may, if I use RAW too often. I've taken to trying RAW+JPEG a lot lately, though. That cuts the effective space of the 4GB card down to probably less than 1GB; in other words, if I just used JPEG, I could do as well with a 1GB card. So I think I still have to only use RAW sparingly, even with a 4GB card!
