Low Light indoor gig - how do I best shoot?
Low Light indoor gig - how do I best shoot?
Hi All - I need some advice on low light shooting indoors. My son is doing a gig at a local venue and I want to take some shots, but when I have tried before my flash seems to wipe out any colour from the lights and doesnt capture the atmosphere. Do I shoot with a flash and if so on what sort of setting - or do I just go super high ISO and no flash? I'm shooting with an A850 by the way. Any help would be gratefully received.

Anna, my advice would favor high ISO. Theatres, concerts are places you are not allowed to use flash, also any lighting system would differ that used in any kind of presentation.
So take high ISO shots at the same time increasing your EV to the + side (up to +1. I go for 2/3). Shoot in RAW and process in LR. You'll be more than satisfied.
Oh and good luck.

Take only your fastest zoom and prime, use at least one stop higher ISO than you're generally comfortable with, and at least one or two stops greater aperture than your peak sharpness. Ultimately, grain and soft corners will be much more preferable to shake and blur.
