The subject will attract many of our fellow forumers/friends (photography and music are 2 fields directed to the soul).
So here it is the famous Armenian duduk (doo-dook)



the person in the shot is the maker of those doodooks depicted

Of course most of you (except Bossel ) have seen the movie 'Gladiator' (starring Russell Crowe), where for the first time in Hollywood history that instrument was used in a background music (musician: Djivan Gasparyan), after which too many western movies have adopted it.

Doc, this is easily my favorite of the pictures you've posted recently. The colors and tones are amazing, and I love how every detail is echoed between the instruments and their maker. Genius!

Doc, how much for a couple of duduks with spare reeds from this maker, sent to Britain, if I send you the funds? I have a friend who would love one, and I'd like one for my collection. They are not as big as some of the examples I've seen 'classical' duduk players using. I realise they are amazingly difficult to play, and even harder to play in the Armenian manner, which is very beautiful. They also seem to have a cap for the large reed, which is a good idea as these reeds are very fragile.

The photo has depth and looks good. The fact that there was no strong sunlight brings out each line and crease in the man's darker facial tones. The photo has a story in it.

The fact that this type of woodwind instrument is generically called 'duduk' in many countries amazes me. In Turkish it's 'düdük'.

NB: I really love the colour palette of this shot - the way the maker's shirt matches the colour of the (mulberry?) wood of the darker instruments!

Hi Dr. Harout,

Very inspired shot, I like the way you present the instrument maker in his own environment. What's more the tonal qualities remind me of the pictures that showed up at the time when the A100 was presented in Morocco... similar atmosphere for my taste.

I really like this forum, it helps me getting excuses for sitting in front of my computer for hours and hours... since I am learing so much about my own profession

By the way, why put it in "Imaging help"? It could easily have been in "Give it your best shot".

Geee, I'm flattered. Thanks to you all.

I'll ask for the prices, but that has to wait till this weekend for the vernissage to be back. I'll even ask from which tree they are carved, but the original duduks are carved from apricot tree (Prunus Armeniaca) and Pear tree (Pyrus armeniacifolia).

Settings on my A700 are as follows: Standard, Contrast +1, Sharpness +1
I use CS3, and on this shot I applied only "Unsharp Mask".
It was shot with SAL16105

And here is another shot of musical instruments.



It was shot early in the morning when everyone was just ranging their stuff.

Exactly, I shoot mainly RAW, JPEG is in very rare instances.

This is a splendid picture in every sense, colour, composition, lighting, subject. Great stuff , thanks for sharing.

I have a question, in reply to someone elses question about settings you stated that you had contrast +1 and sharpness plus one on the A700.

I hate to admit this but I do not know where those setting are on my a700 could you or anyone else reading this let me know where to access those settings, thanks.

Hit the FN button go to creative styles on the display. you can select like standard of vivid. now if you navigate to the right the cursor goe on options for deep/clear/autumn ect and t the right of those is contrast brightness sharpness and zone in some cases
