The only difference . . .

Unread post by UrsaMajor »

.
There is an old saying that, "The only difference between the men and the boys, is the price of their toys." I am reminded of this saying every time I go to a car show/concours competition.

I spent the weekend of June 5-6 taking photographs for the organizers of a local Concours event. This volunteer group puts on a two-day event every June to raise money for the Children's Wing of the local Public Library, and this was their 25th year of the event. They have not finished balancing the books yet for this year's event, but last year they raised $60,000 for the Library.

Here are a few shots from this year's event - and take a look at how much the passenger in the second photo is enjoying himself. :D

With best wishes,
- Tom -

I see that I forgot to mention before that motorcycles are also part of the weekend's events.

If you have not seen the docudrama film, "The World's Fastest Indian", starring Anthony Hopkins, you should do so. It is based upon the true story of a self-taught mechanic from New Zealand who brought his 40 year-old motorcycle to the Bonneville Salt Flats and set a new speed record.

Here is a photo of the actual motorcycle with which he set his record 40 years ago that still stands today. (FWIW, this is not a version that was "cut-away" for display purposes. He actually made the streamlined fairing in two halves that were bolted together when running.)

With best wishes,

Those are neat, Tom. :D

You must have felt in a different kind of heaven for the duration of the show. If only humankind would discover a new way to make those engines run without the thing called 'exhaust' too....

When oil becomes extinct, these really will become some museum exhibits of an era much like dinosaurs.

I like all the cars in your posts. They are colourful and shiny under the Sun. :)

Great cars Tom, a lot of time effort and money there, very nice photography.
I saw that movie of the lovable slightly nutty eccentric mechanic operating on a wing and a prayer, really amazing stuff, they weren't going too let him run at all at first as he didn't even have his nomination in, and his tyres weren't up to the standard required for such high speeds, (some enthusiasts he met there on the pre time-trial days took a liking too him and chipped in on his behalf with the officials and got him entered, money, some tyres, and even a place to stay), his exhaust pipe was burning his leg in the enclosed space the whole time, I watched the high speed run with my mouth open and my heart in my throat. (He also had some rather serious medical problem that caused him to blackout unpredictably, heart I think).
