Old Blue Eyes

Unread post by Dusty »

Actually, it should probably be Young Blue Eyes. My wife caught this little guy trying to hide the other day. There are several young ones running around the yard. A few years ago we had 4 that would eat the cat's food right out of the bowl - with that cat there sharing!

Taken with the KM28-105.

That is spooky! Are the eyes because a flash was used and it is reflecting off the retina?

Upon close inspection it doesn't look too much like the original Frank S. but blue eyes is certainly apt alright, is that normal? or is it a reflection of the flash or something, I don't think I've seen anything like that before. That's a racoon right? they look sortof similar too a Panda bear with that colour scheme I reckon. Interesting photo Dusty.

She took several, and the EXIF on all shows that the flash was fired. All around 8:15 PM, still fairly light out these days. Some were at such distances that on-camera flash should have had very little effect on anything, but all that show eyes show blue eyes, and it appears that way on 2 different raccoons. (I never see both sets of eyes at once, it may be just one blue eyed 'coon that moves around a lot!)

Is there any way to extract the ADI distance from the EXIF info? That may tell us more about the flash effects.

Hi Dusty,

Nice shot of the racoon by your wife. As already mentioned, its a conduct of the eyes in vertebrate animals like cats and dogs, a layer of tissue that's immediately behind or within the retina. The blue may be caused due to daylight and flash light acting together yet coming from different directions with different frequencies.

Tapetum lucidum=Bright Tapestry

Looks interesting though...

Thanks for sharing,

The ADI distance should be there somewhere 'in the system' with a genuine lens, the focus encoder would be well aware of the exact focus distance, but I've never noticed it quoted in the exif, mores the pity.
