People who criticise the 16mm forget that its very simple 5-element design - never before seen in a 24mm f/2.8 equivalent - is exceptional for resiting flare, meaning you can shoot right into the sun like your fishing shot. Try that on a vintage 24mm Minolta on film/full frame.

The colours are maybe not as wonderful as the A100, but perhaps the images have more scope for adjustment (less contrast and saturation by default).

Ahhhh David, thank you for that explanation, I realised straight away that the 16mm lens had a special quality that permitted shooting direct into the sun....and I agree totally that I have never been able to do that before...so thats the reason....check these out from the same set, I thought these were remarkable for the lack of flare, and I have oft wondered how come the lens is so small....I do wish Sony would release a fixed 35mm (ish) lens though, maybe it will come in time

re critisism of the 16mm lens, when I compare the size and cost of the pancake NEX lens to a conventional wide lens like the CZ 16-80 (ok I know thats a zoom lens, but if yo want the wide end there are not that many options) or the KM 17-35, it seems rather silly to complain, its remarkable that Sony have managed to get such quality from such a compact lightwaight design, I think its brilliant

These are beautiful pictures. The 16mm pancake ones appear to be sharp at the corners. How are they at 100%? I got a defective one, which has been repaired by Sony and performs much better now, but still not so good at F2.8. Amazing the lack of flare. I must try that when the weather improves in this part of the world. The A330 picture has good definition. Reminds me of R1 images. Just gone through some of my son's R1 Jpeg images from 2009 taking them through LR3. Amazing camera/lens but rubbish EVF and impossible buffer 1-2 shots before indigestion set in. Did you use the 18-70 or 18-55 kit lens. Looks sharp for 18-70 version. You must have got a good copy.

Well I am happy with my 16mm lens, it looks great at 100% too so you must have been unlucky, re: the shots into the sun, I was very pleased with those, I seem to remember I had to apply considerable -ve ev, but with an LCD it is easy to see how much you need to apply.
The A330 was a much misunderstood camera, I had great success with mine and shot hundreds of really punchy clear sharp landscapes with great colour, I really fine tuned the JPEG settings and managed to get great results, I think the A230/330 were really good....but I seem to be the only person that thinks so , the kit lens (as used here) I think is very good too and much better than the 18-70
On the R1...well it was OK, but I never felt the reverence for it that many still do....very bulky, terrible low light focus speed....naaaa, not that good for me , I will post some more A330 shots at a later date, I liked it very much
