You are very familiar with such curvelinear structures from the heart of nature. This one is concrete and nothing as spectacular as the real canyons but for a man-made structure it has its appeals and moments of surprises. And it's only a few miles from home.

I am sure that Istanbul must be a fantastic place for urban street photography. If you haven't taken advantage of your good fortune of living in such a place then I suggest you do. I bet you could get some wonderful photos of people!

Hi Greg,

You know you don't have to wait for a weather change, don't you? And you don't have to make the photos look like 'photo-of-the-year' at all. You take nice photos anyway, nothing to worry about that part of things...

You can shoot a rain drop splashing against a leaf, a flower petal; you can shoot a frame of your wet boots / shoes /sandals ; you can show the mud on the tyres of your truck or car ; you can shoot from inside of a place out the window ; you can shoot your 'emerging webbed feet' ; you can shoot just anything that has remnants or proof of rain and rain drops....

Thanks for the precise weather input though. That counts!

I took street photos but never to the extensive flow of shooting that you have acquired in life. I think I can start looking for those faces and random happenings when I have the camera with me.
I try not to be too involved with people's actions as a photographer, till now at least. As a person I have this innate makeup which respects human as an individual with a freedom for privacy but there can be some that I really find interesting and funny and collaborative when taking photos on the street. And I also found that I like photographing people who may be demonstrating an illegal action, like a pick-pocket or a bigger crime / happening. I like justice to take its course...and will not hesitate if someone will get hurt as a result of the crime. If I can prevent some, then that's a fine thing that makes me happy for humankind!

Yes, I understand. Most people seem to have little or no interest in photographing humanity. Landscapes, animals, flowers, pets, etc. are much more popular. I do some of that too, but it is not what interests me the most. Although, I rarely am satisfied with my photos I am most interested in photographing human beings in their environment. I am really glad that there are many wonderful photos by others from the past that inspire me. I also understand that for most people it is really tough in a way that other photography isn't. Taking photos of people you don't know can be difficult sometimes. I am not as bold as I would like to be. I care too much about not being obnoxious, etc. It takes time, practice, and experience to learn when it feels right to you. I wish more people were interested in documenting our fellow human beings. A couple of nights ago on PBS I saw part of a wonderful program about American photographers who documented the Great Depression. Most of the photos were of people, some were ones you probably have seen before.

Thanks for the encouragement yildiz, it's just when it gets so damp here in the wet season with +90% humidity, I start to worry about my lenses if it goes on for too long, you never know when, or if, they might contract a fatal fungal disease, (it's the tropics, fungal/mildew city), so I try to limit the amount of time I actually have them exposed, I had a bunch of silica-gel (the type you can re-use after heating), I just don't know where it's got to, I might have to go to the chemist and get some more.
And yes, interesting exchange with Henry, I don't shoot people much, even the ones I do know, never mind the ones I don't....I probably should try people as subjects more often, I tend to just grab the odd shot that might be unusual in some way or another.

That's quite a 'yay' photo, Greg.
Since I sprained my ankle when rollerskating, whenever I see people on high heels and in such outfits, I feel as though they'll fall over and break some part of themselves. But they look nicely balanced and fun to look at.

89% humidity is marginal indeed. I see what you mean about fugal development... I worry about the wetness only after I shoot under rain or snow and then use the hair dryer and the room's central heating to get things right for me.

You need to keep the new camera and the lenses in good shape...would be too soon to worry about the diseases and such.

It's a good design indeed. The whole place is a combination of a shopping mall, residence complex and an office tower. It functions just right and is proved to be cost-effective through its life span so far. You see, cost-effectiveness in good design starts with exceptional architectural concept, especially if there are more than a little too many shopping malls here and there, good design and fine-quality approach is a must.

Don't let my photos fool you with its scarcety for human activity, because I deliberately chose hours when human beings are doing other things than being inside a mall. For arhitectural shots that can be essential. The place is almost always full of people eating, shopping, and waiting for their movie to start. Architects should work better and harder in Turkey because good architecture wins...and always wins the heart of people and pays for itself!

Here's one shot from today, when I visited the Sony Center for some news on new products. The sales person told me that there won't be a new DSLR announced anytime soon and that the new products are mostly HD camcorders and other Sony personal-use devices.

I still have my hopes for a new DSLR though. Maybe Sony would like to surprise everyone including their own salespersons!
I saw the A850 and liked it. No Carl-Zeiss lenses were around... When things like that are scarce I always understand that there's something new to arrive in their places. (Merely from past experience--if one thing you asked for from Sony isn't there, something else is probably in store)

Thank you very much!

Kanyon SM has its own principles on photography. When we go through the gates of security check point everything we have on us and with us are xray-scanned, so they know in advance that you have a camera of sorts with you. Once they see the camera they kindly request if you have plans to take photos within the structure. If you say, "I might or Yes" then they will ask you to inform the Information Office person next to the security check point.

They are particular where the photos of the Kanyon are published if that's the ultimate intention of the photographer and will further guide you on the criteria. But if you are shooting for yourself and family, then there are no restictions.

When you say "Yes, I probably will take some photos", they will give you a 'photo shooting' card in exchange for an ID and some numbers for communication / contact. This is done so that you are not interrupted/prevented by strangers or others when endorsed in shooting.

They are kind and have acquired a good attitude about photography. And since Kanyon is rather spectacular, chaging as the light conditions are changing due to weather and artificial lighting at night that's a good attitude that nurtures its popularity among its visitors.
They keep a good eye on, but not disturbingly and they earn our respect in return... I wouldn't go there that frequently if they were not as they are today... I always have some reason to go back there!

More places should grasp this kind of approach to their visitors...They will always come back for more of the good.
